Whitcomb Creek Park
Overview
Whitcomb Creek Park offers a serene escape on the shores of Green Peter Reservoir in the scenic Cascade foothills. Managed by Linn County, this park provides a more secluded and rustic experience compared to nearby high-traffic recreation areas. The park encompasses over 300 acres of land, providing plenty of room for visitors to spread out and enjoy the fresh mountain air. It is widely recognized for its beautiful wooded sites and direct access to the water, making it a favorite for those seeking a quiet retreat deep within the Oregon wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 15 miles northeast of Sweet Home, the park is nestled along the picturesque Santiam Canyon. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense Douglas fir forests and the expansive, deep blue waters of the reservoir. Because it sits at a slightly higher elevation than Foster Lake, visitors often enjoy a cooler mountain climate and a distinct sense of being immersed in the Pacific Northwest backcountry. The remote setting ensures that night skies are often brilliant and free from urban light pollution.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive-style campground, the park focuses on preserving the natural environment. While there are no utility hookups at the campsites, the park provides essential facilities for comfortable dry camping:
- Vault toilets located throughout the campground loops
- Potable water stations for filling tanks or jugs
- Large sturdy fire rings for evening campfires
- Heavy-duty picnic tables at every site
The sites are generally spacious enough to accommodate various rig sizes, though maneuvering larger trailers requires some care on the park's gravel roads. For boaters, the park features a paved boat ramp that remains accessible even as water levels fluctuate throughout the summer season.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water-based recreation is the primary draw for visitors, with boating and fishing being the most popular activities on Green Peter Reservoir. Anglers often target kokanee and trout in the deep, cool waters. Land-based explorers can venture to the nearby Yellowbottom Recreation Site or hike through the sprawling national forest lands. The scenic drive along Quartzville Road offers stunning views of the Quartzville Creek Wild and Scenic River corridor, where guests can observe historic mining areas and unique geological formations.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and appreciate a slower, more intentional pace of life. It caters specifically to travelers who prioritize nature and privacy over modern resort luxuries or high-speed connectivity. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect from digital distractions and for outdoor enthusiasts who want a rugged basecamp for water sports or exploring the rugged beauty of the Oregon Cascades. Those with small boats or kayaks will find the direct water access particularly beneficial for their stay.

Donnie the camp host is very accommodating and helpful. When we camped, the park was full. There was a misunderstanding about who reserved the camp site we were in. We ended up having to move and with no spots open, Donnie suggested we use his storage lot (with the rangers approval). That was a real genuine thing to do. Donnie is a great camp host. Now will somebody at the ranger station give this man a golf cart to get around?

Love this campground we had a blast. Although the water was low we still had fun hanging at the campsites playing card games, walking around the campground and hanging out.

This is a beautiful place, only complaint i have is how much water got drained out of Green Peter and a dog park would be nice

Furst off, the campground is beautiful! We stayed in one of the deluxe yurts, the peace and quiet was definitely worth it! Be forewarned, no electricity, no heat, no showers/sinks, and the running water tastes like rusty pipes! (Boil only). We went at a time the lake was drained, so we were not able to swim or otherwise get on the water. All that aside, it was a wonderful place to get away from the stress of everyday life and would highly recommend!

Loved this park. Host was the sweetest. It was my daughters 9th birthday and he wished her a happy birthday whenever we saw him.
