White Mountain/Big Rock Campground
Overview
Big Rock Campground offers a serene, back-to-basics experience nestled within the White Mountain National Forest. Located just outside the bustling town of Lincoln, this facility provides a quiet retreat under a thick canopy of northern hardwoods and evergreens. Unlike high-density commercial resorts, this campground emphasizes a connection with nature, offering spacious sites that provide a genuine sense of privacy and immersion. It serves as a peaceful gateway to the region's vast mountain trail systems.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is perfectly situated along the Kancamagus Highway, one of the most scenic drives in the United States. Its proximity to the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River allows guests to enjoy the soothing sounds of rushing water just a short walk from their campsites. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged mountain peaks and dense forests, making it a premier destination for those looking to explore the heart of New Hampshire's high country.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here are functional and primitive, prioritizing the natural environment. Each site is designed to provide a wooded buffer between neighbors. Key features include:
- Hand-pumped potable water stations located throughout the loops.
- Sturdy picnic tables and fire rings with grills at every site.
- Clean and well-maintained vault toilets for guest convenience.
- Direct access to nearby forest trails and river access.
It is important to note that there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, making it an ideal spot for self-contained RVs or those comfortable with dry camping.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will find no shortage of activities within a short drive. Franconia Notch State Park is only minutes away, featuring the famous Flume Gorge and Echo Lake. For hikers, the Lincoln Woods Trailhead provides access to a vast network of wilderness paths. During the summer months, Loon Mountain offers gondola rides and mountain biking, while the town of Lincoln provides charming local eateries and supply shops for restocking your rig.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for nature enthusiasts who prefer the sound of wind in the trees over the hum of a crowded RV resort. Because the sites vary in size and many have tight turns, it is most comfortable for small to mid-sized RVs and camper vans. Travelers seeking a rustic escape from technology and a central home base for mountain hiking will find Big Rock to be a perfect fit for their New Hampshire itinerary.

My wife and I love coming here! This was the OG spot for when we first learned how to camp so I would say this is definitely camping beginner friendly. CALLLING ALL CAT PARENTS 🚨 We brought our cats and they enjoyed their adventure! The owners are very nice and attentive! The water pumps and bathrooms come in CLUTCH! We have a lot of space when we go and always have an amazing time! See you in two weeks Big Rock 🪨💪🏾

Campsite was not clean from prior campers. It was good distance between sites. Quiet. Absolutely no cell reception. But my main complaint was the stairs. Some sites including mine had stairs. A lot. And they were slanted and very sandy very difficult to carry things up and down constantly when you can’t keep anything up there luckily we are not too old and could manage but good luck to anyone who goes there not knowing about the stairs, who are old or handicapped. Or out of shape. Other than that, it’s a good place to just set up a tent go about your day and just come back and sleep. Will I be coming back to this one? Sorry no I will not.

I was very happy here. Campsite 11 Cons- near toilet , squeaky door, slight odor, bring WD40 😳 Pros- near toilet - 32 paces from door 11 is far away from main road. It was very quiet. Clean, easy drive to Loon Mtn. Nice long, drive in tent site. Restroom very basic, clean. Just a toilet. Fire box and picnic table.

A great place to stay in the White Mountains. The campsite was quiet and well kept. The outhouses were clean, and the staff were nice and helpful. Will definitely be staying here again!
