White Mountain/Covered Bridge Campground

Overview

Covered Bridge Campground offers a quintessential New England camping experience tucked within the White Mountain National Forest. Known for its proximity to the historic Albany Covered Bridge, this campground provides a peaceful retreat along the banks of the Swift River. Travelers often choose this spot for its rustic charm and the opportunity to disconnect while staying in one of the most scenic and photographed regions of New Hampshire. The atmosphere is quiet and immersive, focusing on the sights and sounds of the forest.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off the famous Kancamagus Highway in Albany, NH, the campground is surrounded by dense hardwood forests and dramatic mountain landscapes. The centerpiece of the area is the Swift River, which flows adjacent to the site, providing a soothing backdrop for campers. Visitors should note that access to the park via the historic covered bridge has strict weight and height limits, making the alternative entrance from the highway essential for most RV trailers and motorhomes.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional, rustic facility focused on the natural environment rather than modern luxuries. The sites are well-shaded and private, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, the park provides vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water at various locations. It is an ideal destination for those practiced in dry camping who appreciate a quiet, unpaved atmosphere deep in the woods without the distractions of technology.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Boulder Loop Trail, which is accessible directly from the campground and offers stunning overlooks of the valley. The Swift River is a popular spot for wading, fly fishing, and cooling off in the clear mountain water during the summer months. Additionally, the campground serves as a perfect base camp for driving the length of the Kancamagus Highway to witness spectacular fall foliage or visiting nearby North Conway for local shopping and heritage railroads.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for small-to-medium RVs, camper vans, and truck campers who prioritize scenery and solitude over resort-style amenities. Because of the lack of hookups, it appeals to self-contained travelers and those looking for a traditional, back-to-basics camping experience. It is a fantastic choice for photographers and hikers who want immediate access to some of the most iconic landscapes in the White Mountains without the noise of a commercial park.

We stayed at Covered Bridge Campground in the White Mountain National Forest Sept.18-20. In most ways, the experience was the same as any other campground in the WMNF with one exception; the intensity of yellow jackets. From sunup until sundown, they were all around in huge numbers. They swarmed our food and water forcing us to keep things covered and eat in the car. They swarmed the water pumps in the campground, and they swarmed the sun drenched metal fire pits looking for warmth. They seemed to be throughout the entire campground like this. We've camped throughout the region at many campgrounds at many times of the year, including many times in September, and we've never encountered anything like this before. The old adage is too leave them alone and they won't bother you, but I'm numbers like this, and when they're frequently landing on your food and your body, it's a very risky situation. Fortunately, at sunset they mostly went away, so we could enjoy the evenings more safely and peacefully. I'm told they're a real problem on the nearby Boulder Loop Trail, also, but we hiked further down the Kancamagus Highway at Greeley Pond Trail and didn't encounter them. We also had a picnic at Otter Rocks with no yellow jackets, and we camped the previous weekend at Campton with no yellow jackets. It seems to be an isolated severe situation around Covered Bridge and Boulder Loop. Be aware.

Been coming since 1985, still love it to pieces, very glad that it hasn't changed. We always come in August, but global warming has taken away a chilly night's sleep, and brought in extra heat. We're considering coming earlier in the future for nicer weather. Note to hosts/rangers: one of the womens restroom locks was broken, and it was a known issue, but didn't get fixed in the 5 days I was there. This is NOT maintenance, this is safety, and I was disappointed that safety didn't get prioritized.

Fantastic barebones campground. I tent camped here in 2015 and again this spring. Has well maintained pit toilets, each site has a picnic bench and fire ring. No showers, no cell reception, no dish washing station. Both times I've camped I heard Barred Owls. There is water available, a couple of the spigots the water was brownish but the water near site 37 was clear. Hosts were friendly and helpful and also had kiln fried firewood for sale.

Our favorite campground in the White Mountains. Basic, no cell reception, many private sites especially on the Boulder loop trail side. Hosts are great. Safe for kids. If you want to play music or party don’t come here.

Love this campground. Perfectly situated between the Swift River and Boulder Loop Trail and close enough to town that if you forgot something civilization isn’t too far. I don’t love vault toilets but they were clean and only had 1 small spider. Water was delicious and my inner child enjoyed the pumps. I’ve camp here twice and will definitely camp again. Hosts were friendly and helpful. I stayed end of June and again early September.
