White Mountain/Passaconaway Campground

Overview

Located along the iconic Kancamagus Highway, Passaconaway Campground offers a quintessential back-to-basics experience within the White Mountain National Forest. This is not your typical luxury resort; instead, it provides a peaceful, shaded retreat where the sounds of the wind in the pines and the nearby Swift River take center stage. It serves as a premier destination for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of New Hampshire during their RV journey.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of Conway, the campground rests in a historic mountain valley surrounded by towering peaks and lush hardwood forests. The Swift River flows nearby, providing opportunities for cooling off in clear mountain water or trying your luck at fly fishing. The environment is heavily wooded, offering significant privacy between sites. Travelers will find themselves perfectly positioned to explore the Kancamagus Scenic Byway, one of the most famous drives in the Northeast for spectacular vistas.

Amenities & Park Features

As a managed National Forest site, amenities are focused strictly on the essentials for a rustic stay. The park features clean vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water rather than modern full hookups or paved pads. Each individual site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table, perfect for traditional evening campfires. While there are no dump stations or electricity, the spacious, gravel-based sites can accommodate many trailers and smaller motorhomes providing a true dry-camping experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless activities within a short walk or drive from their campsite. The Russell-Colbath Historic Site is adjacent to the campground, offering a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century settler life in the mountains. Hikers can access the Church Ponds Trail or the UNH Trail directly from the vicinity for scenic overlooks and fresh air. For those seeking a bit of civilization, the bustling town of North Conway is nearby, featuring local breweries and the historic Conway Scenic Railroad.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes natural scenery and deep solitude over modern resort conveniences. If you enjoy the art of boondocking and want direct access to world-class hiking and nature photography, you will feel right at home here. It is a fantastic choice for families wanting to teach children about the wilderness or couples seeking a quiet forest escape far from the noise and light pollution of the city.

No host means no nitpicking old goat. Bring your own tp. Clean your own firepit. 1st world problem!!!

Pros: next to Swift River w/ easy access to enjoy and cool off, no reservation needed, close to Conway and Nat’l Park trails. Cons: not kept up, map doesnt match site there’s been changes, firepit was a hot mess when we arrived at 4pm (see photo) camp host should of cleaned it up, NO POTABLE WATER (What?), no cell service and still charging camp fee of $27 per night. If you need water you have to drive to Jigger Johnson Campground…. Why not just stay there? Unfortunately this camp site has gone downhill. Our last visit in June 2020 was a good time. Tip: try Jigger Johnson first

I have been camping in NH and at Passaconway Campground for 30+ years, and this year was atrocious. The campground is not maintained like it has been in past years. There is no host, so issues could not be reported or managed, the road has washout sections with potholes, the campsites are not racked or cleaned, and the bathrooms were poorly maintained and in need of repair. In addition, the water is not working, which is an essential item that we do not pack as it was available at the campground. Vista has been contracted by the USDA Forest Services, and I would not hire that group to manage an ant colony. This sadly may be my last year in NH.

I love camping here. I was on site 3 and 15. Loved 15. 30 second walk to the Swift from site 15. Water was about 70 degrees. Cooler up here on hot summer days. Host Red is great. No noise after 10pm. Sites are spacious and set far enough apart for privacy. Wood available from Red. Cold, pure water available at numerous spigots. No showers. No bathrooms...just outhouse pit toilet.

We like it here because it is quiet and the host is always friendly and helpful.
