White Mountain/Sugarloaf I Campground
Overview
Sugarloaf I Campground offers a classic New Hampshire mountain experience within the White Mountain National Forest. Nestled along the banks of the Zealand River, this facility provides a peaceful escape from more crowded resort-style parks. It is characterized by its heavily wooded sites and proximity to some of the most famous peaks in the Northeast, providing an immersive natural retreat for those who value privacy and scenery over commercial convenience.
Location & Surroundings
Located just off Route 302 in Twin Mountain, NH, the campground sits at the base of the Sugarloaf Mountains. The area is defined by a dense forest canopy and the rushing waters of the Zealand River which flows nearby. The elevation provides a cool climate even in the peak of summer, making it a prime spot for those seeking a rugged mountain atmosphere and deep natural seclusion away from highway noise.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service campground, Sugarloaf I prioritizes nature over modern technology. Visitors will find vault toilets and potable drinking water available from hand-pumped wells throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and picnic table, though there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. The campground is best suited for self-contained RVs or travelers comfortable with dry camping under a lush forest ceiling.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts are perfectly positioned for adventure in this region. The trailheads for North and Middle Sugarloaf are within walking distance, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. A short drive away is the Mount Washington Cog Railway, a must-see historic attraction for any visitor. Additionally, the stunning Crawford Notch State Park provides endless opportunities for waterfall viewing, photography, and world-class hiking throughout the season.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for nature-loving RVers who prefer quiet nights and dark skies over luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for hikers and photographers looking for a basecamp near the Presidential Range. Because of the limited turnaround space and lack of hookups, it is best for smaller rigs, camper vans, or truck campers seeking an authentic wilderness experience in the heart of the mountains.

Greate place to go camping. Not too far from town yet quite to enjoy nature itself. The camp grounds are well maintained. There is both compost and flush toilets available. Definitely try the trails that lead to the creek, especially during sunset to catch some great views. Walmart is a 25 minute drive from campsite and there are some greate restaurants and shops like super secret ice-cream shop and Munroe's Family Restaurant and a few more all of which are within a 15 minutes radius from the camp. group.

This is a wonderful and quiet campground. There is no power but there is water at various places around the campground loop. There are no showers but there are pit bathrooms, no water in the bathrooms. It’s pretty basic but if you are looking for some peace and quiet, this is the place. It is also walking distance to the “Middle Sugarloaf” trail which has some of the most spectaculars views you will ever see! You almost get a 180 degree view and a great view of Mt. Washington. AT&T cell signal was very scarce and Verizon was non-existent. There is no dump station and the road up is pretty bumpy but I loved the campground.

Nice place to camp but the hosts do not do much here. No effort to clean or rake the campsites after campers leave. Firepits full of ash. High grass and dead leaves all around each campsite. Dead tree's around numerous campsites. Very neglected here. We saw the host drive around once while there for 3 days and that was to chk the reservations.

We just finished our annual camping trip to our favorite campground in the White Mountain National Forrest. For the past 26 years the Camp Ground Hosts ran a great family and safe campground. She was firm but ran a safe and friendly campground. But this year the rowdy crowds moved with her retirement. Speeding thru the campground and load music playing. Basically a just I don't care attitude about the other campers. In the past 26 years this would have never happened. The Host would have warned them first, then have gotten them out of the campground. While I love this campground that's in the heart of the mountains. I can't really recommend it as a safe family campground anymore. But like everything in sociality, it's being ruined by the inconsiderate and shellfish!

One of my favorite campgrounds in the White Mountains but the road up has gotten progressively worse. It was so bad this trip I really don't know if I'll be back. Unfortunately my camping vehicle is also my travel vehicle and I like to leave the campground and explore during the day and return at night, so driving down the road twice a day honestly was too much. I may not be back for that reason but it's still one of my absolute favorites campgrounds.
