White Mountain/Sugarloaf II Campground

Overview

Sugarloaf II Campground offers a serene, back-to-nature experience tucked within the White Mountain National Forest. Located near Twin Mountain, this facility provides a rustic alternative to more developed commercial parks. It is characterized by its high-canopy trees and proximity to the Ammonoosuc River, creating a peaceful soundtrack for your stay. Visitors often comment on the crisp mountain air and the sense of seclusion provided by the thick evergreen buffer between most sites. If you value a quiet, forested environment over modern luxuries, this campground serves as an authentic New Hampshire retreat.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the scenic Zealand Road, the park is surrounded by some of the most impressive peaks in the Northeast. The landscape is dominated by dense hardwood forests and the rugged terrain of the Presidential Range. The location provides easy access to the famous Zealand Trail, making it a prime spot for those looking to explore the natural beauty of the White Mountains without traveling far from their campsite. Its proximity to Route 3 makes it accessible yet keeps the noise of civilization at a comfortable distance for a quiet night.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive campground, meaning visitors should prepare for a dry camping experience as there are no electric or water hookups. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor dining. You will find vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water available throughout the grounds. The sites are generally spacious and level, accommodating smaller RVs and trailers who enjoy a secluded forest setting. The lack of streetlights ensures that the night sky remains exceptionally clear for stargazing from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is just minutes away with the iconic Mount Washington Cog Railway located a short drive from the entrance. Hikers can easily reach the trailheads for the Twin Mountain range or explore the dramatic cliffs of Crawford Notch State Park. For those looking for a scenic drive, the Kancamagus Highway is nearby, offering breathtaking overlooks and waterfalls that define the classic New England outdoor experience. The area is also home to Franconia Notch, where you can explore the Flume Gorge and Echo Lake.

Who This Park Is Best For

Greate place to go camping. Not too far from town yet quite to enjoy nature itself. The camp grounds are well maintained. There is both compost and flush toilets available. Definitely try the trails that lead to the creek, especially during sunset to catch some great views. Walmart is a 25 minute drive from campsite and there are some greate restaurants and shops like super secret ice-cream shop and Munroe's Family Restaurant and a few more all of which are within a 15 minutes radius from the camp. group.

This is a wonderful and quiet campground. There is no power but there is water at various places around the campground loop. There are no showers but there are pit bathrooms, no water in the bathrooms. It’s pretty basic but if you are looking for some peace and quiet, this is the place. It is also walking distance to the “Middle Sugarloaf” trail which has some of the most spectaculars views you will ever see! You almost get a 180 degree view and a great view of Mt. Washington. AT&T cell signal was very scarce and Verizon was non-existent. There is no dump station and the road up is pretty bumpy but I loved the campground.

Nice place to camp but the hosts do not do much here. No effort to clean or rake the campsites after campers leave. Firepits full of ash. High grass and dead leaves all around each campsite. Dead tree's around numerous campsites. Very neglected here. We saw the host drive around once while there for 3 days and that was to chk the reservations.

We just finished our annual camping trip to our favorite campground in the White Mountain National Forrest. For the past 26 years the Camp Ground Hosts ran a great family and safe campground. She was firm but ran a safe and friendly campground. But this year the rowdy crowds moved with her retirement. Speeding thru the campground and load music playing. Basically a just I don't care attitude about the other campers. In the past 26 years this would have never happened. The Host would have warned them first, then have gotten them out of the campground. While I love this campground that's in the heart of the mountains. I can't really recommend it as a safe family campground anymore. But like everything in sociality, it's being ruined by the inconsiderate and shellfish!

One of my favorite campgrounds in the White Mountains but the road up has gotten progressively worse. It was so bad this trip I really don't know if I'll be back. Unfortunately my camping vehicle is also my travel vehicle and I like to leave the campground and explore during the day and return at night, so driving down the road twice a day honestly was too much. I may not be back for that reason but it's still one of my absolute favorites campgrounds.
