White Mountain/Wildwood Campground
Overview
Located deep within the lush expanse of the White Mountain National Forest, Wildwood Campground offers a quintessential back-to-nature experience. Situated near North Woodstock, this Forest Service facility provides a peaceful alternative to the high-traffic commercial parks in the area. It is widely regarded as a well-maintained rustic gem where the sounds of the nearby river and wind through the hardwoods replace the noise of the highway. Travelers here enjoy a serene forest setting that emphasizes peace and quiet.
Location & Surroundings
This campground is positioned perfectly on Route 112, also known as the gateway to the stunning Lost River Road. The site is hugged by the Wild Ammonoosuc River, providing a soothing backdrop and opportunities for wading or fishing. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep mountain ridges and dense canopies of birch and maple, creating an immersive wilderness environment that feels remote despite being just minutes from essential town services in North Woodstock.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on simplicity rather than luxury. While the park does not provide modern hookups, it offers several essential features for a comfortable wilderness stay:
- Large, well-spaced campsites that offer significant privacy between neighbors.
- Hand-pumped potable water available at central locations throughout the loop.
- Sturdy fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables at every individual site.
Clean vault toilets are maintained regularly, and the wooded campsites are designed to accommodate a variety of equipment sizes, though big rigs should exercise caution on the interior loops.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is never far away, with the Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves located just a short drive down the road. Hikers will appreciate the proximity to the Appalachian Trail and the various paths winding through Franconia Notch State Park. For those who prefer a scenic drive, the Kancamagus Highway is easily accessible, offering world-class leaf-peeping during the autumn months and spectacular mountain vistas that showcase the rugged beauty of New Hampshire.
Who This Park Is Best For
Wildwood is an ideal match for self-contained RVers and van travelers who prioritize privacy and natural beauty over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for those seeking dry camping in a remote-feeling environment while remaining close to the region’s best hiking trails. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a rushing river and value a rustic, unplugged getaway away from the crowds, this is the perfect basecamp for your mountain adventures.

After hours of driving around we found this spot. The picnic area was empty and it was perfect!! The River is behind the picnic area, you can hear the water running through the rocks. Just a small climb down and you can enjoy the water. We cooked, ate, and after we laid comforters and went down for a nap. They have bathrooms that are clean, they are still outhouses but clean. Across the street is the camping area, some you can reserve and others are to rent as you go, if they are available. The campsites are a bit close so there is not much privacy if you want to listen to music or for those who talk loud (me) Planning to go there July 4th this year

This was a great space to stay for fall leaf peeping. We stayed in site 16 which was nice, and close to the bathroom & water pump, but the website pictures were misleading as to the size of the site. It wasn't small but we were expecting it to be roomier and farther away from other sites. Sites are not squished together but are not secluded either. Fire pits were well-made with two different sized/height grates for cooking. Bathrooms were clean and not stinky. Unfortunately we stayed during the last weekend of the season and the water pumps randomly stopped working for about 24 hours with no warning, so we had to buy water nearby. I would recommend buying wood from the host or nearby, just not the red mesh bags. The wood in those bags from a nearby store burned incredibly fast and were not worth the cost. No phone service in the campground but the Beaver lake tourist site nearby has service. Overall a good time. Campground is super close to the Kancamagus Highway.

Our campsite was well secluded, with a lot of space for our tent and car. The camp host was very kind and helpful, but it would have been nice to have a map of the area/pamphlets with nearby trails. Dump stations and spigots were well scattered around the campground, though there was no sink and the toilets were vault. A good distance from Lincoln and right next to a river to swim in!

For what it is, the campground was amazing and perfect for our needs. The vault toilets were some of the cleanest me and my friends have seen - no piles of bugs or spiders everywhere which i was incredibly thankful for. The water stations were great and scattered throughout the site. Our campsite was the perfect size for us. The campground is dog friendly which allowed me to include my best bud. This was his first camping trip and he did great! My only minor complaint was that the campsite was too rocky for us to get our stakes in the ground so when it rained unexpectedly in the night my shoes got soaked because i couldn’t set up the rain flap to protect them.

I've stayed here twice and was very happy both times. The camp host was pleasant and I have no complaints. I'm already looking forward to the going back in the spring.
