Have tried to go in for a firewood permit multiple times - office is constantly closed for staffing issues or ā€œsupervisorā€ training. Always call first and don’t count in that even being effective - office closes on a whim at any time.

The view is amazing, the western section has fire pit that is pretty well shielded by trees. I recommend bringing your own wood as people have been chopping down the trees there and that shielding will eventually be gone. You'll want that shielding from the cold winds off the lake and the fields behind you.

35 mixed sites for singles up to big groups. About half have tree cover and half are wide open. Previous campers left some of the spots TRASHED but the forest service was out cleaning them up quickly. No services so pack it in & out.

There are many mountain lakes in the White River National Forest, but the day we were there, Piney Lake was our destination. Started the day by driving up to Piney Lake from Vail, Co. Fun drive, and not too treacherous the day we went - even when passing. Speaking of passing. Just pull over and slow down if you are scared and let the other, more experienced, or more crazy drivers proceed in front of you. That way you are not going to accidentally go off the edge or anger someone. If you want to go, don't use GPS. It will not guide you correctly. Google it and follow the signs. It's not too hard to get there. Once we arrived, there were many people up there hiking, fishing, canoeing, and generally enjoying the amazing valley. Even though the road up and back is a bit rough, I would go back, hike more and try to get more photos.
