White River/Difficult
Overview
Difficult Campground provides a serene escape within the vast White River National Forest. Situated at an elevation of 8,100 feet, this location offers a classic Colorado mountain atmosphere characterized by thick stands of aspen and cottonwood trees. It is a primitive camping destination that prioritizes a deep connection with the environment, providing a quiet, shaded alternative to the more developed commercial resorts found elsewhere in the Roaring Fork Valley.
Location & Surroundings
Located just five miles southeast of Aspen, the campground sits near the scenic banks of the Roaring Fork River. The surrounding landscape is defined by the dramatic peaks of the Elk Mountains and the winding curves of the Independence Pass corridor. Because it is nestled in a dense forest canopy, the sites offer excellent natural privacy, though the narrow access roads require cautious driving for those towing trailers or navigating smaller motorhomes.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features traditional forest service amenities designed for a rugged, self-contained experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, along with a mandatory bear-resistant food locker to ensure safety in active wildlife territory. While there are vault toilets and potable water stations available, visitors should be prepared for a lack of hookups, showers, or an on-site dump station. The spurs are generally short, making the park most accessible for rigs under 25 feet.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventurers will find the Difficult Trail accessible directly from the campground, offering a gateway into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness for hikers and backpackers. The Roaring Fork River is a premier spot for fly fishing and wading just steps from the campsites. Beyond the wilderness, the cultural attractions of Aspen are minutes away, including high-end dining, the historic Wheeler Opera House, and the world-famous views at the Maroon Bells.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for minimalist RVers and van-lifers who value peace and natural beauty over modern conveniences. It is a fantastic choice for those who enjoy dry camping and want to be positioned close to world-class hiking and fishing. If you prefer the sounds of a rushing river and the wind through the trees rather than the hum of a crowded resort, this mountain retreat will suit your travel style perfectly.

This campground is clean, convenient, and was as expected. The day use area is also a little retreat from the busy city of Aspen. Nothing noteworthy and the hosts seemed to manage everything well. Price is steep but it is 10 min from Aspen.

The sites are narrow but not difficult to access. The road is smooth. Hosts are friendly and helpful. No electricity. No water at the site.

We enjoyed an incredible stay at Difficult Campground in August. The sites were amazing, facilities were well kept, and the camp hosts were so kind and helpful. Rebecca in particular went out of her way to make sure we were set up for our visit, and had a lot of great information to share. We will definitely be back!

Great campground close to Aspen and Independence Pass. Wonderful camp hosts, Rebecca and Lauren were a great help, and if we needed anything, they were always around and very friendly and professional. More camp hosts should be like them, they are the best we've come across. We will definitely be back.
