White River/McDonald Flats
Overview
White River/McDonald Flats offers a traditional Colorado camping experience within the vast expanse of the White River National Forest. Located just north of Silverthorne, this area provides a tranquil setting for those looking to disconnect from the modern world. Unlike many highly developed resorts, this park emphasizes the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains, offering a simple yet profound connection to nature. Visitors can expect a peaceful atmosphere where the natural landscape and open skies take center stage.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the northern shores of the Green Mountain Reservoir, the park sits at an elevation that offers cool summer temperatures and stunning alpine vistas. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling sagebrush hills and dramatic mountain peaks. Being a short drive from the town of Silverthorne, travelers enjoy easy access to the Blue River valley, a region renowned for its scenic water views and proximity to high-altitude wilderness areas that define the Colorado high country.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping area designed for self-contained travelers who appreciate a minimalist approach. The facilities are basic, featuring vault toilets, picnic tables, and established fire rings at designated sites. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, making it a prime destination for dry camping enthusiasts. The sites are generally spacious, though larger rigs should navigate carefully as the access roads are gravel and reflect the natural, unpaved terrain typical of forest service land.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. The adjacent Green Mountain Reservoir is a popular spot for boating and paddleboarding, while the nearby Blue River offers exceptional fly fishing opportunities. Hikers can explore a variety of trails within the Dillon Ranger District, ranging from leisurely forest walks to more challenging treks that provide panoramic views of the Gore Range. Wildlife viewing is also common, with chances to see osprey, deer, and elk.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for travelers who prefer boondocking and a rustic environment over luxury resort amenities. It is an excellent choice for anglers, nature photographers, and those who want a quiet, budget-friendly home base while exploring Summit County. If you value seclusion and natural scenery more than high-speed internet or full utility connections, White River/McDonald Flats is a perfect fit for your adventurous travel style.

Just twenty five minutes away from Silverthorne Co and you can enjoy this amazing camping area. They have a fire place for each parking spot and the admission is just 18 bucks just have change. Just be responsible and keep it clean and do not leave the fire still burning. At night with full moon you can enjoy a peaceful view and amazing time. Then during the day you can drive around the lake for more amazing foto spots.
