White River/North Fork

Overview

The North Fork Campground, nestled within the expansive White River National Forest, offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature. Located along the scenic Flat Tops Trail, this destination provides a rustic camping experience that highlights the rugged beauty of the Colorado high country. It is an ideal spot for those who want to disconnect from digital distractions and immerse themselves in the peaceful forest atmosphere that only this region can provide.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 35 miles east of Meeker, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet, surrounded by towering aspen and spruce trees. The North Fork of the White River flows directly adjacent to the camping area, providing a constant soundtrack of rushing water. This remote setting serves as a gateway to the Flat Tops Wilderness, where expansive plateaus and jagged peaks dominate the horizon, offering some of the most untouched landscapes in the state.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities are designed for self-sufficient RVers. Visitors will find primitive vault toilets and access to seasonal hand-pumps for drinking water. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires. While there are no hookups or dump stations available on-site, the spacious sites accommodate varied rig sizes, providing a sense of privacy and seclusion rarely found in commercial parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity near the campground. The area is renowned for world-class fly fishing on the North Fork, where anglers frequently pull trout from the clear mountain waters. Hikers can explore the nearby Marvine Lakes Trail or take a short drive to the iconic Trappers Lake, often referred to as the cradle of wilderness. The Flat Tops Scenic Byway also offers breathtaking vistas for photography and wildlife viewing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for adventurous boondockers and nature photographers who value solitude over modern luxuries. It is a perfect match for anglers looking for easy river access and hikers wanting to explore the Flat Tops region. If you travel in a mid-sized RV or camper van and prefer the scent of pine over the hum of a highway, this high-altitude retreat will meet your needs perfectly.

Found this spot as we were scouting fishing spots on the white river. We stayed in 28. Clean bathrooms, quiet because it was empty. You can hear the rider from the sides closest to the road. No views because you are surrounded by trees. $30/night for primitive camping is expensive. Maybe that’s why there were only 4 of 28 sites occupied on a September Saturday?

A delightful hidden gem of a campground hidden in the middle of nowhere down the path less travelled. The majority of the sites are excellent relative to other remote campgrounds. #22 is the best by landslide, hands down, but many great options exist to make it with a freak drop-in. The campground was completely empty. Given how busy other campgrounds have been I was shocked when the host noted that I was the first camper in over 2 weeks. Unlike other campgrounds (I've seen thus far across Can/US) the $30/night rare is *steep*, and may be contributing to the low usage. Since I have the entire place to myself, I'm justifying the $60 as that premium for peace. Beyond that as a regular rate It would weigh heavily on my returning. That said, it's a wonderful campground that people who still enjoy tenting will have a lot to choose from here and not be left with the scraps leftover by RV users

Stayed for three nights. There are bathrooms that are clean, trash bins, and water to turn off fires. We stayed in #22. I would recommend others to stay here. Diana was kind introduces herself(host)

I typically never post a comment about my experience somewhere but I think it is absolutely ridiculous to make it mandatory that you have to reserve Friday night to reserve a spot when you are only going to be there on a saturday and sunday . We have always stayed at the North Fork campground in the past but I will take my money else were. Stupid idea.

Great little spot in a beautiful valley. We're usually in a remote camp for hunting. This was our first time staying in a campground for hunt camp. There were toilets. Enough said.
