Whiteshell Park/West Hawk Lake
Overview
West Hawk Lake, situated within the expansive Whiteshell Provincial Park, offers a camping experience centered around a massive meteorite impact crater. This geological history created the deepest lake in Manitoba, characterized by its remarkably clear, sapphire waters and rugged surroundings. RV travelers find a well-established destination that balances wilderness immersion with easy access to a small resort community. It is a cornerstone of the Manitoba provincial park system, providing a serene backdrop of ancient stone and deep forests.
Location & Surroundings
Located near the southeastern border of Manitoba and Ontario, the park is defined by the Canadian Shield landscape. Towering granite cliffs and dense boreal forests encircle the campsites, creating a secluded atmosphere despite its popularity. The lake itself is the primary draw, featuring rocky shorelines and sandy beaches. Because it is part of a larger provincial park, the area serves as a gateway to exploring the diverse ecosystems of the Whiteshell region, from marshes to pine-covered ridges.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at West Hawk Lake is designed to accommodate a variety of setups, offering full-service hookups including electricity, water, and sewer for modern RVs. Campers have access to clean washroom facilities, coin-operated showers, and a convenient firewood supply. The park features a sandy swimming beach within walking distance of many sites, along with a boat launch for those looking to get on the water. Families often appreciate the on-site playground and the well-maintained picnic areas scattered throughout the grounds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is endless, with the nearby Caddy Lake Rock Tunnels offering a unique paddling adventure through blasted stone passages. Hikers can challenge themselves on the Hunt Lake Trail or enjoy the scenic vistas of the Pine Point Rapids. For a bit of education, the West Hawk Lake Meteorite Museum explains the fascinating cosmic history of the area. Additionally, the townsite provides local shops and dining options, allowing visitors to stock up on essentials or enjoy a meal away from the campfire.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who want to experience the rugged beauty of the shield without sacrificing modern comforts. It is particularly well-suited for families looking for a beach-centric summer vacation and geology buffs intrigued by the lake's unique origins. Whether you are an avid hiker, a boater, or a traveler seeking a tranquil natural retreat, West Hawk Lake provides a versatile basecamp for exploring the best of Manitoba’s wilderness.

Great price and wonderful location! Beautiful lake. Ufo documentted sighting in the late 1960s Lake is 3000 ft deep made from a crater. Great diving site .

Beautiful Beach . Campground is wide open no trees between campers . The grey and black water connection for full service seems to be missing a ring so almost constant septic smell leaking out. As you are sitting about 20 ft away it’s a bit stinky. I packed mine with a garbage bag to fill in the opening and covered it with a garbage bag. Mine is better but the neighbours not so much .

During our cross canada-trip in our motorhome, this has been our favourite stop so far! We stayed for a week and a half, the campground is very clean and well maintenced, there was a water break one morning that affected all the water in the campground and they had it fixed within 30 minutes! The showers are a lot cleaner than a lot of other ones we've been to. The beach in the campground is absolutely beautiful, sandy and sunny and the bay is a good shelter from the wind. The water is so clean and clear too, and it's a great lake for paddle boarding or kayaking. There was no rowdy campers, definitely a family friendly park and there is 3 different stores all walking distance from the campground, and a 24 hour laundromat. And a nice hiking trail right in the campground teaching hikers about the meteor and the lake. Awesome place, we will be back!
