Whiteswan Lake Park

Overview

Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential British Columbia wilderness experience for RV travelers seeking to escape the crowds. Situated in the heart of the Kootenay Ranges, this park is renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery and clear, turquoise waters. Unlike manicured resorts, this park provides a raw connection to nature, making it a bucket-list destination for those traveling through the East Kootenays near Canal Flats.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located approximately 22 kilometers east of Highway 93/95, accessible via the Whiteswan Forest Service Road. As you climb into the Rockies, the landscape shifts from valley floors to dramatic limestone peaks and lush sub-alpine forests. The road is gravel and can be active with industrial traffic, so RVers should prepare for a slow and steady drive while keeping their headlights on. Once inside, you are surrounded by dense coniferous forests and the soaring peaks of the Hughes Range.

Amenities & Park Features

Camping here is geared toward self-sufficient RVers who enjoy a rustic atmosphere. Across the five campgrounds, including Alces Lake and Packrat Terrace, you will find well-spaced gravel pads that accommodate various rig sizes. Facilities are limited to pit toilets, fire rings, and hand-pumped well water. There are no electrical hookups or sani-dumps within the park, so ensure your batteries are charged and tanks are managed accordingly before arrival. Most sites offer a sense of privacy rarely found in private parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crown jewel of the area is Lussier Hot Springs, located just inside the park boundary. These natural thermal pools sit right along the Lussier River, offering a soothing soak in a wild, uncommercialized setting. Anglers frequently visit Alces Lake, which is famous for its trophy-sized rainbow trout and fly-fishing opportunities. For those who enjoy hiking, the North and South Shore trails provide scenic vistas of the lake and opportunities for wildlife viewing, including frequent sightings of moose, elk, and golden eagles.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for the adventurous RVer who prioritizes natural beauty and solitude over modern luxuries. It is a perfect fit for dry-camping enthusiasts and families looking to unplug from technology and reconnect with the outdoors. If you enjoy mountain photography or backcountry fishing, Whiteswan Lake provides an unparalleled backdrop. Travelers with smaller to mid-sized rigs will find the navigation easiest, though the park remains a favorite for experienced big-rig drivers looking for a true mountain escape.

Stayed at pack rat point Campground overnight. The campground itself is beautiful. However, on my recent stay, logging trucks started hauling at 2:30 AM, the road was quite dusty so all the road dust was drifting into the campground during the day. Just a warning, if you plan on tying your boat to the dock across the street overnight, it might be a good idea, not to leave it unattended, as my boat was vandalized, and all the items stolen out of it overnight on August 11th.

No fires. First come first serve camping varies for the multiple sites from 5-25 per night. Pit toilets, water pump (boil advisory). Very rugged forestry road to campgrounds. Close encounters with extremely swift moving logging trucks. It's their road. Lake is clear and cold. So clear you can see the fish! Hotsprings had a closed sign on the gate.

Gorgeous place, many options to access lake and river at all kinds of spots. Roads are fine and lots of camping spots available. Tons to explore. Make sure to visit lussier hot springs that are on the way. It says no dogs allowed however many do bring the dogs and it's totally fine. Has 2 pit toilets but no changing room which really isn't an issue. Drove back late evening, got to see a moose and a bear. Absolutely amazing area, would like to spend a week, a day is simply not enough.

The road is throughout the Mountain and narrow so be prepared to stop when needed as there's lots of RVs on the way. Google maps won't take you to the best spot as there are several camp sites so just keep driving till the end and make sure you download the map before. This lake is huge and so beautiful. It's great for SUP and fishing. We saw very big fish there. Plenty of areas for picnic and enjoy the day. I hope I get to camp on one of their sites. Just beautiful.

Beautiful spot to camp . The hot springs were a little disappointing but perhaps we didn’t know the right area to go . One very hot pool , would be very nice in the winter I’d imagine
