Whitney Lake - COE/McCown Valley
Overview
Welcome to McCown Valley Park, a scenic getaway managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the shores of Lake Whitney. Known for its expansive water views and limestone bluffs, this park offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers. Unlike a busy commercial resort, McCown Valley emphasizes the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country and the recreation opportunities provided by one of the state's largest reservoirs. It is a destination that balances quiet evenings with active days on the water.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Whitney, TX, the park sits on the eastern shore of Lake Whitney, where the Brazos and Nolan Rivers meet. The landscape features rolling hills covered in cedar and oak trees, providing a mix of shade and open vistas. The area is famous for its white rock cliffs that contrast beautifully with the deep blue water. Access is straightforward for travelers coming from I-35, making it a convenient escape into the rugged, natural terrain of Central Texas while remaining close to local conveniences.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides a variety of sites, many offering 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups and water connections. RVers will find spacious sites, many of which accommodate larger rigs, though checking specific pad lengths is recommended. Key features include multiple boat ramps for easy water access and designated swimming beaches for summer cooling. For those traveling with horses, the park is unique for its dedicated equestrian camping area and extensive trail system. Essential facilities like hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station ensure a comfortable stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water recreation is the primary draw here, with the lake being renowned for striped bass fishing and recreational boating. Beyond the park gates, visitors can explore Lake Whitney State Park for additional hiking or visit the town of Whitney for local dining and small-town charm. The nearby Brazos River offers excellent paddling opportunities for kayakers. History buffs may enjoy a short drive to Hillsboro or Clifton to see historic architecture and local museums, while bird watchers will appreciate the migratory species found along the shoreline.
Who This Park Is Best For
McCown Valley is ideal for travelers seeking a rustic, nature-focused experience rather than a luxury resort. It is a top choice for families and anglers who want direct access to the lake without the noise of city life. The park is particularly well-suited for equestrian enthusiasts due to its specialized facilities and miles of riding trails. If you appreciate wide-open spaces, star-filled nights, and a quiet atmosphere where the primary entertainment is the great outdoors, this COE park is an excellent fit for your next Texas adventure.

Pretty awesome sunset views camping on the water in early October. People near us didn’t have dogs on leash, sort of a bummer for our dog who needs a leash and is protective, but still great - campsite 42. Had electric but no sewer with a small pop-out camper. Trying out a new sewer tote to the dump station without the hook-up. Dump station was fine- no- nonsense, in the shade with a long hose provided. Only used the nearby restroom once - kinda wet and dirty, but it’s a campground. No soap or dryers. But the restroom was wheelchair accessible for our one family member in a chair. Site #42 wasn’t accessible’ for the wheelchair but we could move it around a bit, and the water views were great. The site is lower to the water but still a grassy slope. Great water access for kayaking and paddle boarding. Pulled our boats right up to the campsite.

We liked this park for swimming! We were able to get in for free with our America the Beautiful National Park pass, so if you have that, bring it! Maybe not the best park for fishing, but it was nice and clean!

Beautiful well kept park. We loved it. Lots of horse trails(we rode our bikes on them). The staff, scenery and the lake were all absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend. We will be back! Nice sandy beach for swimming. Lots of fishing areas and boat docks!
