Location & Surroundings
Located near the summit of Santiam Pass, the campground is approximately 25 miles west of the charming mountain town of Sisters, Oregon. The surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic history and the lush terrain of the Willamette National Forest. Its position makes it a primary gateway for exploring the high-country wilderness of the Central Cascades. Visitors will appreciate the cooler summer temperatures and the crisp mountain air that define this high-elevation forest setting, providing a welcome escape from the valley heat during the peak of summer.
Amenities & Park Features
This facility is tailored for a dry camping experience, meaning visitors should arrive prepared without expectations for electricity or water hookups. The campground provides various sites that can accommodate different RV sizes, though maneuvering larger trailers requires caution on the narrower forest roads. Basic necessities are handled through well-maintained vault toilets and potable water provided by manual hand pumps throughout the loops. Shared features include:
- A paved boat ramp for launching motorized and non-motorized watercraft.
- Dedicated picnic tables and fire rings at every individual campsite.
- Direct access to the lakeshore for swimming, sunbathing, and shore fishing.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is Big Lake itself, which supports motorized boating, sailing, and windsurfing. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the campground provides easy access to the Pacific Crest Trail and several other wilderness hiking routes that lead deep into the forest. Additionally, the nearby Sand Mountain area is a significant attraction for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, offering unique riding opportunities on volcanic cinders. The proximity to the Mount Washington Wilderness ensures endless exploration for those who enjoy rugged, natural landscapes and volcanic geology.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts who value a prime location over luxury resort amenities. It is a favorite for families with boats and those looking for a basecamp to explore the high wilderness areas of Central Oregon. If you enjoy a social atmosphere centered around water sports or OHV riding and do not mind the lack of utility hookups, this high-elevation retreat is a perfect match for your travel style. Been camping here for 36 years every summer. The campground is beautiful, the lake is clear, and my family will be here gain next year.

PROS ---> Combination of quiet spots and party zones so you can find what you want. ---> Plenty of parking ---> Water gets choppy and there's a good breeze CONS ---> Motorboats are what's making it fun and choppy but then there's the gas that leaks, the safety issues, etc. -‐-> Recent fires and logging have ruined part of the beauty here.

It’s beautiful but the mosquitos are relentless - it’s all day and night biting and I ain’t exaggerating. Went for a two night trip but could only bear one. If they put mosquito dunk in each campsite, I would go back.

Beautiful lake! Love the view of I think Mt Washington. Lake is a good temp and not too deep either. Came on a Saturday mid June and it wasn’t packed with people. My only complaint is the mosquitos were bad! The worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. I was covered in bites and ended up having to put on cloths so they would stop. They also went for my dog who was covered in little bite bumps. It was nearly unbearable.

Great place to camp especially with little kids, the water is shallow far out so they can have a lot of fun. This is our 3rd year camping here and we absolutely love it! My sister's youngest is 3yrs old out there floating and the oldest is my 8yr old son who can touch all the way out by his raft (see photo) when he stands it's a little above his waist.
