Willamette/Humbug Campground
Overview
Humbug Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience tucked within the Willamette National Forest. Situated alongside the Breitenbush River, this destination is characterized by towering Douglas firs and western hemlocks that provide a deep sense of seclusion. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the lush, green canopy of the Oregon Cascades, providing a serene riverfront atmosphere for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short drive from the mountain town of Detroit, Oregon, the campground is easily accessible via Highway 22 yet feels worlds away. The Breitenbush River flows adjacent to many campsites, offering the constant, soothing sound of rushing water. The surrounding terrain is a mix of dense old-growth forest and rugged mountain landscapes, providing a stunning and shaded backdrop for any camping trip in the heart of the Willamette region.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service site, meaning it prioritizes the natural environment over modern luxury. Visitors will find vault toilets and seasonal potable water, but there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. Each site is equipped with a standard picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings. Most sites are paved, helping RVers level their rigs while still maintaining the authentic, off-grid experience that public lands are known for.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for travelers in this area. Just a few miles away, Detroit Lake provides ample opportunities for boating, jet skiing, and swimming during the summer months. Anglers often frequent the Breitenbush River for trout fishing directly from the riverbank. For hikers, the nearby trails leading into the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness offer breathtaking views and challenging terrain for those looking to explore deeper into the Cascades.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for dry campers and nature enthusiasts who appreciate a quiet, forest setting over resort-style amenities. Because there are no hookups, it is best suited for those with self-contained RVs or travelers who enjoy a traditional camping style. It is a perfect fit for families and solo travelers seeking a peaceful mountain escape away from the crowds of larger, more commercialized RV parks.

We stayed at Humbug this past weekend, 7/7-7/9/23, and had a great trip! Here are some hopefully helpful review points for anyone considering a stay. Facilities: bathroom was always clean with plenty of toilet paper. The nearby water spigot was readily available and functional. River access: steep and inaccessible to folks who aren’t mobile and surefooted. The trail we attempted with our toddler in tow had a short but sketchy washed-out, cliffside section with a rope handrail. It was enough to turn us around; between our improper flipflop footwear and precious kiddo cargo, it wasn’t worth a potential slide down into the canyon! Scenery: most of the campground is still lush and green, with some lingering old growth firs above a smattering of vine maple and red huckleberries. Some sites, including 6, 8, and 9, were impacted by the fire and have minimal shade/greenery, or look straight out at the burn. People still had a good time camping in those spots! If you prefer lots of classic Oregon greenery while camping though, I’d recommend choosing a different spot. Across the river, the canyon is severely burned. Sites: we stayed in Site 7 and, for the most part, it was great. The pros: lots of privacy, proximity to the bathroom/spigot, and a sizable pullout for extra vehicles. The cons: smaller space, very uneven ground, and tons of tripping-hazard rocks jutting up near the firepit from an old fire ring. All in all, it’s a good campground and an incredibly lucky green oasis amid the burn. I’m excited to see what site maintenance and improvements come now that it’s open again. Enjoy!

This is an excellent little campground just a few miles up FS RD 46 from Detroit. It can get busy during Summer weekends but mid week you can usually find a nice spot. The sites are very spacious but at the same time many are very private. I usually try to get one down by the river. The sound of the rushing water is very calming. Has water, and vault toilets that are usually kept quite clean. Highly recommened for families and the solo camper.
