Willamette/Packard Creek Campground

Overview

Packard Creek Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience on the western shores of Hills Creek Reservoir. Managed by the Willamette National Forest, this campground provides a serene escape tucked under a dense canopy of massive Douglas firs, hemlocks, and western red cedars. It is a premier destination for travelers looking to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy a lush forest setting that feels worlds away from the city. The park offers a perfect blend of woodland shade and waterfront access for a relaxing stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just nine miles south of Westfir and Oakridge, the campground is positioned perfectly for exploring the scenic Middle Fork Willamette River corridor. The geography is defined by the dramatic, forested hillsides of the Cascade Range and the expansive, blue waters of the reservoir. This location serves as a gateway to the high Cascades, offering a landscape where the environment is exceptionally peaceful and the stars are brilliant at night. The surrounding forest is thick with moss and ferns, creating a vibrant green backdrop for every campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, dry-camping facility that caters well to self-contained RVs and adventure seekers. While there are no utility hookups, the park features several key amenities for visitors:

  • Paved parking spurs designed to accommodate a variety of RV lengths up to 45 feet.
  • Access to potable water and well-maintained vault toilets throughout the loop.
  • Individual sites featuring a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings.

The facility also includes a paved boat ramp for motorized and non-motorized watercraft, making it easy to spend a day on the reservoir.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves at the heart of the action with plenty of recreation nearby:

  • The Larison Creek Trail, which is highly regarded for both hiking and technical mountain biking.
  • Excellent fishing opportunities for trout, salmon, and crappie within the reservoir waters.
  • The historic Office Covered Bridge in Westfir, which is the longest covered bridge in Oregon.

A short drive north leads to the world-famous mountain biking trailheads of Oakridge, known globally as a premier destination for singletrack enthusiasts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a perfect fit for boondocking enthusiasts and mountain bikers who prioritize direct trail access and raw natural beauty over resort-style luxuries. If you travel in a van, truck camper, or mid-sized trailer and enjoy a quiet, off-the-grid atmosphere, you will find this park ideal. It is especially well-suited for families who enjoy traditional camping experiences like morning paddles on the water and evening campfires under the trees.

Campsite driveways are very small when it says they can handle a 30ft or 40ft sizes camp trailer take roughly 5-10ft off that. Sleeping areas for tents are way away from actual camp site table and fire rings on most sites that wwe saw. Also the fur trees covering the area seep sap all over just be aware. And lake access is limited and due to the lake level being very low its a good walk down to it.

Super nice campground! Stayed in campsite 29 and it was pretty big for two tents to be put up and a third could have fit as well. The lake is very nice. It’s not too cold and not too warm so you can actually enjoy swimming in it! The bathrooms where very clean and didn’t smell bad which was also a plus in my books. The only downside for the campsites is there is poison oak everywhere so if you have any little ones don’t let them play in the bushes or plants, if you can, and you’ll be good. The campsite is a little spendy but I would say it’s pretty worth it if you’re staying for a few days.

Lovely lake for boating, skiing, and swimming! Beautiful scenery! Parking for cars or campers at the camp sites, which tend to be steep, is very cramped on the narrow ring road. Tent sites are not entirely level! Running water is placed at decent intervals, and tastes good. However, although campers are encouraged not to wash dishes or otherwise contaminate these sites, waste water disposal drains are not at all close to the running water. I cannot imagine that, therefore, campers don't routinely use them in conflict with the signage. Otherwise you have to tote both your waste water and your clean rinse water quite a distance. Pit toilets are clean and inoffensive. However there aren't many, and you'd best have your own light source by dusk!

A really great campground! Seriously the cleanest and best smelling pit bathrooms I've ever been in, very well kept! It was beautiful and amazing for the price.
