Willamette/Paradise Campground

Overview

Willamette/Paradise Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience nestled within the lush Willamette National Forest. This site is widely recognized for its majestic old-growth forest and its proximity to the rushing waters of the McKenzie River. Unlike modern resorts, this campground emphasizes a return to nature, providing a peaceful environment where the scent of cedar and the sound of the river dominate the atmosphere. It serves as an ideal basecamp for travelers seeking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Oregon Cascades.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along Highway 126 in McKenzie Bridge, OR, the campground is surrounded by towering Douglas firs and Western red cedars. The McKenzie River flows directly alongside the site, offering stunning views and easy access to the water. The surrounding geography is defined by volcanic landscapes and dense greenery, creating a canopy that provides excellent shade even during the height of summer. Its location makes it a strategic stop for those traveling the McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway, offering a deep-woods feel that is still accessible from the main road.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, forest-service-style facility, meaning visitors should prepare for a dry camping experience without electric or water hookups. The campground features paved loops and spurs that can accommodate a variety of RV lengths, though larger rigs should check specific site dimensions. Key features include accessible vault toilets and potable water from hand pumps scattered throughout the loops. Each individual site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a picnic table, providing the essential tools for a traditional campfire evening under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, with the famous McKenzie River Trail accessible nearby, offering miles of world-class mountain biking and hiking. Just a short drive away, visitors can marvel at the turquoise depths of Tamolitch Falls (Blue Pool) or the thundering cascades of Sahalie and Koosah Falls. For those seeking relaxation after a day of exploration, the nearby Belknap Hot Springs provides a soothing soak. The river itself is a primary draw, popular for fly fishing, whitewater rafting, and kayaking through its clear, cold waters.

Who This Park Is Best For

Willamette/Paradise Campground is best suited for nature enthusiasts and self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over luxury amenities. It is a perfect match for families who enjoy traditional camping activities like roasting marshmallows and exploring forest trails. If your travel style involves high-speed internet and full utility connections, this may not be your primary choice; however, for those who value unplugged serenity and riverfront access, it is an unbeatable destination in the heart of Oregon.

Paradise Campground did not disappoint. We settled in for 3 nights at campsite #52 right by the river close to the end of the season. Rich and Cam were great hosts. Not many campers so the campground was very quiet and peaceful. Will continue to come back. Lots of activities close by, but relaxing at the campsite was great as well.

This is a beautiful place but beware of noisy campers. We endured till 5am, drunk, obnoxious, loud, animal type behavior. No one slept in our group of seven. The camp hosts did nothing to quiet them. They did leave after one night, however, no campers should have to endure that.

Our tent site was backed up to the McKenzie River. The sounds of the river all night long was so calming. The park staff kept the restrooms clean and stocked. No showers, but flush toilets were excellent. Ez drive in and out. McKenzie Bridge services were within driving distance for ice, and a great selection of camping supplies.

Lovely campground on the McKenzie River. Great for boaters or people wanting access to the McKenzie River trail.

Wonderful campground. sites are close but not on top of each other, with lots of shrubbery that separates some sites so you have a feeling of privacy. Lots of trees which means lots of shade. You can access the McKenzie river trail right from the entrance of the campground. The hosts Cam and Rich were fantastic! Always available, helpful, kind and informative; very hardworking. Bathrooms were kept clean, sites were clean. Everything looked well cared for. Plenty of water but no showers. It's a large campground (60 something sites, I think) and very popular even though there are no hookups that I could see. Lots of large families in large RVs. Dog friendly. I stayed for 4 days in a small tent and felt safe and comfortable. I will definitely be staying again!
