Willamette/Riverside Campground

Overview

Riverside Campground, managed by the Willamette National Forest, offers a classic Pacific Northwest camping experience along the banks of the North Santiam River. Located near the small community of Idanha, Oregon, this site provides a serene escape under a canopy of towering old-growth trees. It is a place where the constant melody of rushing water creates a peaceful atmosphere, making it a favorite for those seeking a genuine connection with nature in a lush, emerald-green setting.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away deep within the Willamette National Forest, the campground is situated just off Highway 22, making it accessible yet remarkably secluded. The area is characterized by a dense forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and western red cedar. The proximity to the river is the primary draw, providing cool breezes and a stunning visual backdrop. The surrounding Cascade Mountains offer dramatic scenery and a sense of isolation from the bustle of modern life.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, dry camping destination, meaning there are no electric or water hookups for RVs. The campground features paved parking spurs that can accommodate moderately sized RVs and trailers. On-site facilities are basic but well-maintained, including vault toilets and potable water access via communal hand pumps. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, providing the essential components for a traditional outdoor living experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore just minutes from their campsite. The campground provides direct access to the Riverside Trail, a scenic path that follows the river through the old-growth forest. Just a short drive west is the expansive Detroit Lake, where visitors can enjoy boating, swimming, and jet skiing. The North Santiam River itself is a prime destination for anglers looking to fly fish for trout in a tranquil environment.

Who This Park Is Best For

Riverside Campground is ideal for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, primitive setting over a busy commercial resort. It is a perfect match for anglers, hikers, and photographers who want to immerse themselves in the scenic beauty of Oregon. If you travel in a mid-sized rig and value privacy, river views, and a traditional forest experience over luxury amenities, this campground is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Really nice spacing and greenery between campsites, only about 10min East of Idanha, fresh water spigots throughout campground, nice fly fishing opportunities for native trout

Great campground. Stayed on site 30 next to the river and that makes a difference with the noise from the road. Place was clean and bathrooms too. Had great experience and not our first stay there. Some sites are hard to get to the water from especially on the east loop. Overall a great campground. Recommended.

Had a nice stay here. Getting to the river is tough on the east loop. Host was friendly and available. The vault toilets were pretty clean for vault toilets. They are very dark inside even during the day. Fire rings were in great shape, sites were clean. The site we stayed in had many tripping hazards like tree roots, rocks, and stumps(bring a head lamp). The water spigots were clean and the water was very fresh and cold. Waste water and periodic dumpsters. Like other reviews, there is the noise from the highway. We didn't think it was too bad and could hear the river over it most of the time. We will definitely return and try for a different site.

Campground is right beside the highway and I could hear traffic all night. There was also no river access for folks camped across the campground from the river. Bathrooms were clean and there was potable water and a place to dispose of kitchen sink water. It was extremely frustrating that the campground host’s rules are different than what is stated on Recreation.gov. We were told by the campground host that we could not have more than two tents. I’ve never heard of this. We had two 2 person tents and one 3 person tent for six people. How was this not allowed but we could have had two 10 people tents with 10 people total? These completely arbitrary rules either need to be on Recreation.gov or need to be standardized across campgrounds. What were we supposed to do when we had driven two hours with each group having a tent and then we find out about the tent limit? Drive back to a store to buy a tent? Cram four adults into a two person tent? Then the website says that each car beyond one is $8, however the campground host was telling us that we couldn’t even have more than two cars. And then our payment for one of the cars was questioned on day 2 of being there (this was beginning to feel a bit like harassment at this point). We also
