William M Tugman
Overview
William M Tugman State Park offers a peaceful alternative to the wind-swept beaches of the Oregon Coast. Situated on the shores of Eel Lake, this park is known for its serene freshwater environment and lush coastal forest. Unlike the more exposed dune-side campgrounds, the geography here provides a sheltered, calm atmosphere that makes it a favorite for those who enjoy lakeside camping and quiet mornings on the water. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the diverse landscapes of Coos County.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of Lakeside, OR, the park is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountain range. While it is just a short drive from the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the park feels worlds away from the high-energy sand tracks. The campground is surrounded by a dense canopy of Douglas fir and spruce trees, providing a sense of privacy and seclusion. The transition from the rugged shoreline to the tranquil freshwater ecosystem of the lake provides travelers with the best of both worlds.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, featuring 94 campsites with water and electrical hookups. While individual sewer connections are not available at the sites, the park maintains a clean and accessible universal dump station for guest use. On-site facilities include hot showers, flush toilets, and a large day-use area. For those who enjoy being on the water, the park provides a boat ramp and a spacious accessible fishing dock that stretches into the clear waters of Eel Lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Activities at the park revolve around the water and the woods. Anglers frequently visit to catch largemouth bass and rainbow trout, while the lake’s glassy surface is ideal for kayaking and canoeing. Hikers can enjoy a scenic trail that circles the lake, offering glimpses of local wildlife and osprey. Just a few miles away, visitors can experience the thrill of the dunes at Winchester Bay or explore the Umpqua River Lighthouse, making this a central hub for coastal sightseeing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for nature lovers and families who prefer a calm, forest-themed retreat over a busy resort environment. It is particularly well-suited for freshwater anglers and paddle-sport enthusiasts who want immediate access to the water. RVers looking for a quiet, reliable stop along the Highway 101 corridor will find the paved pads and shaded sites a refreshing change of pace from more exposed coastal locations.

Privacy between camping spots is great due to the lush vegetation. A loop is near the highway so traffic is fairly loud, but B and C loops are quieter. Showers are nice and warm.

Very nice and clean park. Sites are separated by a generous amount of vegetation that adds a level of privacy not normally experienced. Biggest con was no sewer hookup, just a dump station on the way out. Eel lake is within walking distance and has a swimming area and a fishing pier. I think there was a boat ramp as well but didn't walk close enough to see it. There's a volleyball net, a decent size playground and several hiking trails nearby.

Had site B30. It is an ADA accessible site so had a nice brick paver patio. Driveway is asphalt and needed leveling boards to get level but not too bad. Electric and water at site and dump station on the way out. Sites can be a little close together but it's a state park so it's generally how it is. No one checking you in so if your site is empty you can have it no worries about check in time. Verizon was ok. Able to text and make phone calls. Could stream tv with some buffering but was watchable. Would recommend and stay again if in the area.

It's like any other forested RV campground. Facilities are in good condition. There's a playground with a badminton net in the day use area.

Pretty nice camp ground. Yurts with a place for a tent at many places and RV's. RV spots are in an area not to far fr9m yurts that way you don't have to be separated from your fellow campers. Nice showers with water that stays warm. I think bathrooms need a bit of work though. Over all this place is very calm with peaceful vibes. Nice park and lake few minutes away. Park rangers are very chill. It was a great experience for us
