Williamson

Overview

Williamson Provincial Park, located on the picturesque south shore of Sturgeon Lake, offers a classic Alberta camping experience that remains a local favorite. This cozy park is part of the province’s official park system and provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to enjoy the beauty of the Peace River Country. It is a well-maintained destination that balances the ruggedness of the outdoors with essential comforts, making it a favorite for lakefront camping enthusiasts and road trippers alike.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 15 minutes west of the town of Valleyview, AB, the park is nestled within a lush forest of mature aspen and spruce trees. The primary draw is its position on the water, providing guests with direct access to one of the region's most popular recreational lakes. The landscape provides natural shade and privacy between many of the sites, creating a serene woodland atmosphere that feels secluded from the nearby highway while remaining easily accessible for large rigs.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers a variety of sites, including several equipped with power hookups for RV travelers. On-site facilities are designed to support an active outdoor lifestyle and include the following:

  • A convenient boat launch for easy lake access
  • A children's playground located near the camping loops
  • Large picnic shelters and clean pit toilets

While the park maintains a rustic charm, it includes fire pits at every site for evening gatherings. Visitors should note that while tap water is available on-site, it is often recommended for utility use rather than drinking, so bringing a fresh supply is highly encouraged.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the heart of the experience at Williamson. The lake is a renowned destination for fishing, particularly for those seeking Walleye and Northern Pike. Boating, kayaking, and windsurfing are common sights on the water during the peak summer months. For those looking to explore further, the town of Valleyview provides essential services and local shops, while Young's Point Provincial Park is situated just across the lake, offering additional hiking trails and bird-watching opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for family campers and dedicated anglers who prioritize proximity to the water. It suits RVers who enjoy a more traditional, natural setting over the paved stalls of a luxury resort. Because of its location near the Highway 43 corridor, it serves as a high-quality overnight stop for travelers heading toward the Alaska Highway or a quiet weekend destination for those looking to reconnect with the Alberta wilderness.

I have worked all over Alberta, BC, & Sask... when I do get to come back home to do a project, I look forward dealing with this locally owned and operated business. From the knowledgable staff and consistant service, through to the products carried... without question, Valleyview Building Supplies has always been the best experience.

Gord and his staff know what they are doing, and treat you like a friend. Combine that with a huge selection of products and you have a top notch business.
