Willmore Recreation Park

Overview

Willmore Recreation Park offers a serene and natural escape for travelers passing through central Alberta. Located just south of the town of Edson, this municipal park provides a scenic riverside setting along the banks of the McLeod River. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park emphasizes a rustic camping experience, allowing visitors to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the rugged beauty of the Canadian wilderness. It serves as an ideal base for those who appreciate quiet evenings and forested surroundings.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the McLeod River valley, the park is characterized by its dense stands of spruce and poplar trees and its rolling topography. Its location is strategically convenient for those traveling the Yellowhead Highway between Edmonton and Jasper. While it feels worlds away from the bustle of the city, it remains just a short drive from the local services in Edson. The proximity to the river provides a refreshing backdrop and a cool breeze during the warm summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

As a natural recreation area, the park features unserviced campsites that cater specifically to self-contained RVs and tents. Visitors will find basic essentials such as pit toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits for evening gatherings. One of the standout features of this location is the extensive multi-use trail system, which is meticulously maintained for hiking and mountain biking. Additionally, the park is home to a renowned 18-hole disc golf course that attracts enthusiasts from across the province.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the McLeod River offering opportunities for fishing and canoeing. Just a few minutes away, the town of Edson features the Galloway Station Museum, where travelers can learn about the region's coal branch history and railway heritage. For those needing a break from the elements, the Edson Leisure Centre provides indoor swimming and skating facilities. The park also serves as a peaceful gateway for travelers planning to explore the majestic Jasper National Park further west.

Who This Park Is Best For

Willmore Recreation Park is best suited for self-sufficient RVers who prefer boondocking or dry camping over luxury amenities. It is a haven for mountain bikers and hikers who want immediate access to trails from their campsite. Families who enjoy active outdoor adventures and pet owners who appreciate wide-open spaces will find the park particularly rewarding. If you value a quiet, star-filled sky and the sound of a flowing river over high-speed internet and full hookups, this park is a perfect fit.

Lots of parking, clean out houses, walking trails and many accesses to the river. This is an amazing place to go walking, visiting, camping, playing or relaxing in or out of the water. I love going there.

There is sooo much to offer here, all year round. Super big hill for sledding, trails for walking and exploring, large and calm river for swimming, camping stalls w fire pits and available firewood, an event building that fits a decent amount of people and has a wood stove inside, volleyball net, small park w a shed filled w toys, water pump, picnic tables, very well kept outhouses. No showers tho. The bike skills park is absolutely awesome !! Don't waste your time hum'n and ha'n, go check it out for yourself. You won't be disappointed. Theres something for everyone at Wilmore ! Not that anyone should be staring at their phone while enjoying the great outdoors, there is wifi as well.

Great place, stopped in while passing through town. Looked to be a wonderful campground and interesting bike park. Heard some people talking about floating the river and it was great!!

I really liked this place. My true profession is geologists, and I really liked how it was much easier to collect stones there than in Edson itself. The type of soil there is also better for stone searching. I don't really rate the service there because it wasn't the mainstream of my ratings. Overall the nature is like everywhere else.
