Willow River
Overview
Willow River State Park is a premier destination for RVers seeking natural beauty and quiet reflection in Western Wisconsin. Spanning over 2,800 acres of diverse terrain, the park is most famous for the magnificent Willow Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall that cascades into a deep, rocky gorge. This stunning natural feature serves as the heart of the park, drawing visitors into a landscape of rolling prairies, hidden valleys, and dense hardwood forests that change beautifully with the seasons. It offers a authentic outdoor experience that highlights the geological wonders of the region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just five miles northeast of Hudson, WI, the park provides a perfect balance of rugged wilderness and urban accessibility. It sits within the scenic St. Croix River Valley, a region known for its high bluffs and pristine water. The surrounding geography is defined by the Willow River itself, which meanders through the property before joining the larger river system. This proximity to the Minnesota border makes it an easy escape for those coming from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area while remaining firmly planted in the quiet Wisconsin countryside.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates RV travelers with several distinct camping loops, many of which offer 30-amp electric hookups. While the park does not provide sewer connections at individual sites, a centrally located sanitary dump station and potable water fill stations are easily accessible for rigs of various sizes. Guests can enjoy modern comforts including flush toilets and hot shower facilities during the peak season. For recreation, the park offers a sandy swimming beach on the lake, multiple fishing piers, and spacious picnic pavilions for afternoon gatherings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Exploration is the main highlight here, with the Burkhardt Trail offering some of the best views of the falls and river valley. Water lovers can spend the day on Little Falls Lake, which is perfect for canoeing, paddleboarding, or searching for panfish. Just a short drive away, downtown Hudson features a historic main street filled with local eateries and views of the St. Croix. In the winter months, the park transforms into a hub for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, making it a year-round destination for active travelers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This state park is ideal for active families and hikers who want to immerse themselves in Wisconsin's natural heritage. It appeals to those who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over the high-activity environment of private RV resorts. It is a top-tier choice for photographers and birdwatchers looking for diverse wildlife in a protected habitat. Additionally, its convenient location makes it a perfect long-weekend retreat for residents of the Twin Cities or a refreshing, scenic overnight stay for cross-country travelers passing through the Midwest.

Beautiful fall hike to see some local waterfalls. The hill to go to the Falls from the closest parking lot to the entrance of the park has a very steep incline. It was hard to get back up that hill after hiking around. Also, it’d be nice if they had more restroom and or outhouse opportunities for people that are hiking.

This was a great, off the radar and quiet park. Really nice hiking trail around the lake and the waterfall is very cool. The stairs up to the lookout are worth the effort. Lots of open space on dam end of lake. Really enjoyed the variety along the trails.

We had such a wonderful time! This is my second time coming here and we did the main trail around the main park. We hiked for 3.5 hours and it was so beautiful. The trail is well kept and the signage is sufficient to follow the correct trail. We did come across some outdoor toilets that seemed to be under construction or damaged. We had a wonderful time! Out of state is $16 per car for entry.

If going to hike to the falls at this park it is steep but solid wide trail! With plenty of benches to stop and take breaks along the beautiful walk to see the falls. We hiked with a little 12 year old doggy and a 7 year old it was perfect! Wonderful bridge and a look out at the falls. The look out is a serious amount of steps but very well maintained and again doable for most able to walk. Just take your time and enjoy the hike.

This is a great park to hike. The paths are easy to walk, handicap accessible (not sure on the northern silver trail or the pink trail), and most of the trails are compacted earth. I should note, the silver trail to the falls is VERY steep, it'll give you a workout.
