Wilson Island SRA
Overview
Wilson Island State Recreation Area offers a quiet escape within the Missouri River valley. Originally an island created by the river's shifting currents, the park now encompasses over 500 acres of dense cottonwood stands and scenic meadows. It provides a peaceful setting for RVers who enjoy a more traditional camping experience while remaining close to the river’s natural flow and the diverse wildlife that calls this important ecological corridor home.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Missouri Valley, Iowa, the park sits directly adjacent to the sprawling DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. The landscape is defined by its strategic position along the Missouri River and its flat, heavily wooded terrain. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by mature timber that offers ample shade and privacy, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels remarkably distant from the busy interstate corridors of western Iowa.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features a well-maintained campground with several electric sites that accommodate a variety of RV sizes. Guests have access to modern shower and restroom facilities as well as a convenient dump station for self-contained units. For outdoor recreation, there are over five miles of multi-use trails and a dedicated concrete boat ramp providing direct water access. The spacious sites allow for a level of tranquility that is perfect for relaxing after a day on the water.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Nature enthusiasts should prioritize a visit to the neighboring DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, which serves as a premier destination for spotting migratory waterfowl and majestic bald eagles. History buffs can visit the refuge’s visitor center to see the salvaged cargo of the Steamboat Bertrand, which sank nearby in 1865 and contains thousands of well-preserved artifacts. Additionally, the river itself offers excellent opportunities for boating and fishing for catfish and walleye in a scenic Midwestern setting.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for RVers who prefer rustic natural beauty and quiet evenings over high-energy resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for avid birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, and travelers who enjoy exploring local waterways. Because of its serene environment and immediate access to nature trails, it best serves outdoor enthusiasts looking for an authentic and peaceful basecamp along the Missouri River floodplains.

State Park campground electrical worked fine. Did not use water as it had a-lot of iron in it. Dumpster was full when we setup on Wednesday & Overflowing on Sunday when we left. Only 1 of 2 tank dumps was working….no flowing water at the dump site.

Nice quiet camp ground. Sites are not to close. There is poison ivy around so be careful. There are water spickets around. There is a boil order in effect. The water is brown and smells bad. The camp manager said the water is always brown. It stained toilet. We left after 2 days.

Has some great trails thru the park but Chute trail south of the boat ramp has so many downed trees you have to scramble over, around, or thru the downed trees. I couldn’t even tell where the actual trail went. Needs some trail maintenance.

Spacious camp sites with tent camping. Shallow part of the river that makes for snagless fishing and easy boat access ramp. We like how close to council bluffs it is. Bathrooms are clean.

I camped here the last weekend before they shut down for the season, so, it was full. Plenty of space for tent camping. Shower was good enough with perfect temp, for non adjustable. There is Magneese in the water, do not injest. This apparently causes yellow water stains. The toilets and sink look disgusting, but are probably as clean as they can get. I29 is near by with road construction. They work all night. Check that for next season. Plenty of hiking trails and DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge right there.
