Wilson Lake - COE/Lucas Park

Overview

Lucas Park offers a gateway to Wilson Lake, famously known as the clearest lake in Kansas. This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park provides a tranquil setting where the prairie meets rugged shoreline. It is a destination defined by its natural beauty, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle of highway travel while maintaining accessible facilities for modern RVers.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the heart of the Smoky Hills region, the park is surrounded by dramatic sandstone bluffs and mixed-grass prairies. The elevated terrain provides sweeping views of the 9,000-acre reservoir. Its position on the north shore of the lake ensures a rugged, natural backdrop that feels worlds away from the flat landscapes often associated with the Midwest.

Amenities & Park Features

Visitors will find spacious campsites, many of which feature 50-amp electrical hookups and water connections. The park is well-equipped with essential facilities, including a central dump station, modern shower houses, and vault toilets. For recreation, the park offers a dedicated swimming beach, multiple boat ramps, and shaded picnic areas perfect for large gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, specifically those interested in the Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail, which is recognized as an Epic trail by the International Mountain Bicycling Association. Anglers frequent the waters for trophy-sized striped bass and walleye. Just a short drive away, the town of Lucas features the whimsical Garden of Eden, a world-renowned folk-art site.

Such an interesting spot, in the middle of KS! We camped at the lake and our site was right on a cliff over the water! Campground was great and the hikes at the lake were interesting and fun. As a photographer, there were plenty of spots for great sunset and sunrise photos, as well as rock formations on one of our hikes. It was the perfect first experience of this beautiful lake!

We visited and camped on a beautiful late summer day. The campground is well maintained with many choices depending on what you like. The lake water is fairly clear and inviting. Trees are scatter about with a variety of interesting grasses and vegatation. Nice big grand views.

Fantastic campground. Beautiful country. Easy trailer parking. Only negative this is the tiny little porcupine burrs. Kinda rough for the long hair dogs. And very sharp.

Great stop when passing through Kansas , several campgrounds , most require a little walk to the bathhouse . Clean lake , lots of access . Switchgrass mountain bike trails are within the park and super nice . The lovegrass bluegrass festival was about to kick off as well . Water and electric hookup at the sites , dump station station is fairly convenient .

Fantastic place to camp and have lake days! Campsites are clean and well maintained, include flushing toilets and showers that are also clean (for camping). The marina store has the essentials if you forget something, and you can rent boats, jet skis, etc
