Wilson Lake - COE/Sylvan Park
Overview
Sylvan Park is a peaceful Army Corps of Engineers campground nestled below the dam of Wilson Lake. Known as one of the most scenic spots in the Kansas prairie, it offers travelers a chance to experience the clearest water in Kansas amidst a landscape of dramatic rock formations. The park provides a quiet, well-maintained environment where the focus is on natural beauty and outdoor recreation rather than resort-style distractions.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a few miles north of Sylvan Grove, KS, the park sits within the Smoky Hills region. The surrounding area is defined by unique Dakota sandstone bluffs and rolling hills that contrast sharply with the flat plains often associated with the state. Because it is positioned below the dam, the park offers a sheltered atmosphere with plenty of mature trees that provide essential shade during the warm Kansas summers.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features spacious sites equipped with 50-amp electrical hookups, catering to various RV sizes. While individual sites may not have sewer hookups, a convenient dump station is available on-site, along with access to potable water. Guests have access to clean flush toilets and shower facilities, which are a hallmark of COE managed properties. Additional features include a playground for families and covered picnic shelters perfect for group gatherings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy, starting with the Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail, which is nationally recognized for its challenging terrain and stunning views. Wilson Lake itself is a premier destination for striped bass and walleye fishing, attracting anglers from across the region. Visitors can also explore the nearby town of Lucas, Kansas, known for its unique folk art, or spend a day boating on the vast, blue waters of the lake.
Who This Park Is Best For
Sylvan Park is ideal for nature lovers and mountain bikers who want to be close to some of the best trails in the Midwest. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking a quiet weekend getaway where they can disconnect and enjoy the water. Because of its spacious layout and affordability, it also serves as a perfect stopover for cross-country RVer travelers looking for a high-quality, scenic place to rest not far from the I-70 corridor.

Such an interesting spot, in the middle of KS! We camped at the lake and our site was right on a cliff over the water! Campground was great and the hikes at the lake were interesting and fun. As a photographer, there were plenty of spots for great sunset and sunrise photos, as well as rock formations on one of our hikes. It was the perfect first experience of this beautiful lake!

We visited and camped on a beautiful late summer day. The campground is well maintained with many choices depending on what you like. The lake water is fairly clear and inviting. Trees are scatter about with a variety of interesting grasses and vegatation. Nice big grand views.

Fantastic campground. Beautiful country. Easy trailer parking. Only negative this is the tiny little porcupine burrs. Kinda rough for the long hair dogs. And very sharp.

Great stop when passing through Kansas , several campgrounds , most require a little walk to the bathhouse . Clean lake , lots of access . Switchgrass mountain bike trails are within the park and super nice . The lovegrass bluegrass festival was about to kick off as well . Water and electric hookup at the sites , dump station station is fairly convenient .

Fantastic place to camp and have lake days! Campsites are clean and well maintained, include flushing toilets and showers that are also clean (for camping). The marina store has the essentials if you forget something, and you can rent boats, jet skis, etc
