Wind Creek

Overview

Wind Creek State Park stands as a cornerstone of Alabama’s outdoor recreation, spanning over 1,445 acres of pristine landscape. Known as one of the largest state-run campgrounds in the nation, it serves as a massive playground for RVers seeking both adventure and tranquility. The park is defined by its direct access to Lake Martin, offering a sprawling retreat where the forest meets the water in a seamless blend of natural beauty and accessibility.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Alexander City, the park occupies a scenic peninsula along the 44,000-acre Lake Martin reservoir. The surrounding area is a lush mix of hardwood and evergreen forests that provide ample shade and privacy for many of the campsites. Because the park is positioned on such a large body of water, visitors are never far from a scenic vista or a quiet cove, creating a sense of being far removed from the bustle of urban life while remaining conveniently close to local services.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 586 sites, including premium waterfront spots with water and electrical hookups, as well as a selection of full-hookup sites. Beyond the pads, the park offers a variety of guest services including a marina with boat slips, a refueling station, and rental options for those without their own craft. Guests also benefit from multiple modern bathhouses, a laundry facility, and a camp store for supplies, ensuring a comfortable stay for both short-term travelers and long-term visitors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the lake is the primary draw for swimming and boating, the area offers several land-based excursions. The Speckled Snake Trail system offers miles of hiking and biking opportunities through diverse terrain, ranging from easy walks to moderate climbs. For a change of pace, visitors can drive to the nearby Horseshoe Bend National Military Park to explore significant historical landmarks. Additionally, the local Alexander City area provides charming shops and dining options for those looking to experience Alabama hospitality.

Who This Park Is Best For

Wind Creek is the ultimate destination for boaters and fishing enthusiasts who want their RV parked just steps from the water. It is also an excellent choice for large families who require a wide range of activities to keep everyone entertained, from the swimming beach to the playground. RVers who value natural state park settings over commercial resort luxury will find the rustic yet well-maintained atmosphere of Wind Creek perfectly suits their travel style.

As I am writing this, we are staying at Wind Creek State Park in our motorhome and we have really enjoyed our visit. The park is huge and its biggest feature is that it is sitting right on Lake Martin, the third largest lake in Alabama. Many of its more than 100 RV sites are on peninsulas overlooking the lake which make for beautiful views looking out of the windows of your RV. The sunsets over the lake can be spectacular. (See pictures.) The RV sites have electrical, water, and storage hookups. To my knowledge, they do not have cable TV, however, we did use the park’s free Wi-Fi to connect our TV to the Internet to stream TV and/or movies. If you have children, there are a number of playgrounds with swings, slides, timing apparatus, etc. scattered throughout the park. There are a number of bath houses scattered through the park where campers can take a shower or use the restrooms. There are also to locations were campers can do their laundry. Lake Martin is known as a good fishing lake. I saw a number of people just enjoying riding around in their boats. Some people had pulled their boats up to the shore right next to their RV site. There at least two boat ramps that I am aware of in the park. One of them is near the marina/country shore, where there are docks with slips where people keep their boats permanently on the lake. The country store has stuff such as drinks, snacks, fishing equipment and bait and other stuff that you might need while camping. We really enjoyed our three day stay at the park. I would highly recommend it for camping and/or boating if you’re anywhere near the area

Beautiful park on Lake Martin. Lots to do. Ample amenities. We just camped over night but I wish we'd had more time. Hundreds of different types of camping sites.

Absolutely love Wind Creek State Park. We had one of the improved sites for two weeks. The site we had was concrete. It’s was very level and clean. Park was almost totally full each weekend the WiFi never skipped a beat.

Had a great time, clean camp sites. Bath houses also fairly clean for the amount of traffic they had through them. Many play grounds for the kids as well. Will come back for sure.

Great campsites are on the point, only negative. Some are very close to each other but a really nice campground.
