Winterset City Park

Overview

Winterset City Park serves as a scenic and historical anchor for travelers visiting the heart of Madison County. This 76-acre destination is far from a standard municipal stop, offering a lush landscape filled with limestone bluffs and mature trees. Visitors are often drawn here to witness the Cutler-Donahoe Covered Bridge, which was moved to the park in 1970 to ensure its preservation. The atmosphere is peaceful and community-oriented, making it a perfect spot for those who appreciate local heritage and quiet afternoons in a well-maintained natural setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the south side of Winterset, Iowa, the park is nestled within a region famous for its rolling hills and agricultural charm. The surroundings are characterized by wooded ravines and the winding Middle River nearby. It provides a sense of seclusion while remaining conveniently close to the amenities of downtown Winterset. The terrain inside the park is diverse, featuring elevated overlooks and winding roads that lead to the iconic Clark Tower, a stone structure providing panoramic views of the valley.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground within the park offers essential comforts for RV travelers, including sites equipped with electricity and water hookups. While it maintains a rustic charm, the park provides access to several key facilities:

  • Clean restrooms and shower buildings for guest use.
  • A convenient on-site dump station for waste management.
  • Historic stone picnic shelters built by the WPA.
Beyond the campsites, the park is famous for its English Hedge Maze, a unique feature that delights families and garden lovers alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many is the self-guided tour of the famous Bridges of Madison County, with several bridges located just a short drive away. Cinema fans will enjoy visiting the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum, located less than a mile from the park entrance. The town square is home to a stunning historic courthouse and various local boutiques and eateries. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the park’s own trail system leads to limestone caves and scenic vistas perfect for birdwatching or casual hiking.

Who This Park Is Best For

Winterset City Park is an ideal choice for history enthusiasts and fans of classic Americana who want to immerse themselves in local lore. It is best suited for RVers who prefer a quiet, park-like atmosphere over the amenities of a large commercial resort. Families will appreciate the open spaces and the hedge maze, while photographers will find endless inspiration in the stone architecture and covered bridges. It serves as a perfect home base for those taking a slow-paced road trip through the beautiful Iowa countryside.

This is one of the nicest city parks we've stayed at. You can even visit one of Madison county's bridges in the park. Enjoyed the town square and quilt museum while there.

This is just a beautiful place. It's also firefly city at night! I am very upset we got there so late and didn't get to see everything and had to keep going. But we loved what we got to see

Great park. All kinds of spots to relax... to play for the kids... a small hike to the tower is cool. It's a shorter trail back fyi.
