Wood Mountain Regional Park
Overview
Wood Mountain Regional Park offers a quiet escape into the rolling hills of southern Saskatchewan. As one of the province's most historic sites, this park provides a unique blend of natural beauty and deep cultural roots. It is widely recognized for its connection to the North West Mounted Police and the legendary Lakota leader, Sitting Bull. Travelers will find a well-maintained space that prioritizes community spirit and the preservation of the local landscape while offering a serene camping experience far from the city.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled within the Wood Mountain Uplands, the park sits at a higher elevation than much of the surrounding prairie. This results in cooler breezes and scenic vistas that differ from the typical flat horizons of the region. Located south of Assiniboia near the Montana border, the park is surrounded by vast ranch lands and historic sites. The natural springs in the area once provided a vital water source for indigenous peoples and early settlers alike, contributing to the lush greenery found within the park boundaries.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features a variety of camping options, ranging from basic tent sites to serviced RV sites with electrical hookups. Families often gather at the outdoor swimming pool, which serves as a centerpiece of summer activity. Other facilities include:
- Clean washroom facilities with hot showers.
- A playground and baseball diamonds for active recreation.
- An on-site museum detailing local history.
- A concession stand offering snacks and refreshments.
These features ensure that guests have access to modern comforts while still enjoying a rustic, outdoor atmosphere.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
A major highlight is the Wood Mountain Post Provincial Historic Park, located right next door, where visitors can explore reconstructed buildings from the late 1800s. Hikers and birdwatchers will appreciate the proximity to the Grasslands National Park East Block, known for its rugged badlands and dark sky preserves. Additionally, the park hosts the historic Wood Mountain Stampede, which has been an annual tradition for over a century, drawing rodeo fans and history buffs from across the country every July.

Park was nice....the highway has been patched but there was a section that had a lot of gravel on it for about 50 ft..

The park itself is beautiful. The pool is wonderful and perfect for families with little kids. It's a great place to get away and relax!!!

It does the job. Spots are not leveled, and narrow. Water is rich in iron, so don't fill your water tank... On the bright side, you'll never see skies like that. Far from everything, you'll enjoy the quietness. You'll feel like a cowboy for a night... concession is what to expect. Make sure to bring your checkbook, as it is self registration, and you need to leave payment in a mailbox. No cash... Pool, and play area are perfect for young kids... Enjoy!
