Overview
Madison Campground is one of the most sought-after destinations within Yellowstone National Park due to its incredible proximity to the park's primary geothermal features. This campground offers a rustic wilderness experience that allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the backcountry. Nestled among lodgepole pines and situated near the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers, it provides a peaceful atmosphere for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural world in its purest form.
Location & Surroundings
Positioned just 14 miles east of the West Entrance, the park sits at the strategic junction of the West Entrance Road and the Grand Loop Road. This centralized location serves as a perfect hub for navigating the park’s figure-eight road system. The campground is bordered by the beautiful Madison River valley, an area famous for its lush meadows and frequent wildlife sightings. It is not uncommon for visitors to wake up to the sound of bugling elk or see bison wandering through the nearby grasses.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional national park facility, the focus here is on the environment rather than modern luxuries. The park features no utility hookups, making it a destination for dry camping. However, it is well-equipped with essential facilities, including:
- Potable water stations located throughout the loops.
- Flush toilets and sinks in shared restroom buildings.
- A seasonal dump station and water fill area for RVs.
- Individual sites equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Staying at Madison puts you at the doorstep of Yellowstone’s most iconic landmarks. To the south, the Old Faithful Geyser and the stunning Midway Geyser Basin are just a short drive away. To the north, the hissing steam of the Norris Geyser Basin awaits. Anglers will appreciate the world-class fly-fishing opportunities on the Madison and Firehole rivers, while hikers can explore the nearby Harlequin Lake trail for a quiet escape into the woods.

Madison Campground is a great place to set up camp for a week at Yellowstone. Very clean, Heated bathrooms with flush toilets, a fully stocked camp store centrally located are great. There is also a 4 bay dump station on site. The campground itself is essentially in the middle of the 2 loops of the park, so all areas can be reached after a short drive. Since we came in from the west, it was also convenient for us entering and exiting the park.

We used Madison Campground as our base camp for 5 days. It was great, the park staff was amazing. Only complaint was the LOUD family that had kids running and screaming all night long, until about 3am then again at 6am. The early time was no problem since we are up in the park early but would have been nice to not have such inconsiderate neighbors. Not the park’s fault.

This campground is very busy. Campsites are very close to each-other but overall it wasn’t super loud. Bear box firewood and ring available. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were close by and clean and had dishwashing station. Wish the lights were motion-censored at bathrooms or dimmer to help with the stargazing bc the skies were so beautiful.

Great campsite. Easy access to park areas, while being able to hop into town if needed. No cell service but we just drove 5 miles toward west Yellowstone at the bridge to connect. Right there is where the elk hang out and occasional bison, or bear, so always got wildlife fix in evenings. Campsite is clean, everyone is friendly and shocked at how quiet it is all the time. People are quite respectful. And of course, easy access to river for fly fishing.

Loved this campground! Check-in was pretty easy. The campground was so pretty. There is access to the lake. We were able to take some nice photos here and even spot an elk. Many accessible bathrooms that were clean and had toilet paper. The campground is surrounded by pines so it feels very cozy. The store was clutch for last minute things. Recommend!
