Yellowstone/Slough Creek

Overview

Slough Creek Campground offers one of the most intimate and remote camping experiences within Yellowstone National Park. Tucked away at the end of a two-mile graded dirt road in the Lamar Valley region, this site is renowned for its quiet atmosphere and unparalleled access to the natural world. It is a primitive location where the soothing sounds of the creek and the distant calls of local wildlife replace the hum of generators and highway traffic, providing a deep connection to the land for those looking to escape the busier corridors of the park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the northeastern corner of the park, the campground sits gracefully along the banks of Slough Creek. The surrounding landscape features the expansive meadows and rolling hills that characterize the Lamar Valley, often referred to as the American Serengeti. This area serves as a primary corridor for grizzly bears and wolf packs, offering a front-row seat to the park’s most iconic predators in their natural habitat. At night, the lack of light pollution reveals a stunning, star-filled sky that is rarely seen elsewhere.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive campground, Slough Creek focuses on a rustic experience. You will not find electric, water, or sewer hookups here, and the use of generators is strictly prohibited to preserve the silence. Due to the narrow access road and smaller site footprints, this park is best suited for small RVs, camper vans, or truck campers. Essential park features include:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal potable water from a hand pump.
  • Individual bear-proof food lockers provided at every site.
  • Standard fire rings and picnic tables for traditional camp cooking.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the world-class fly fishing available right at your doorstep in the pristine waters of Slough Creek, known for its challenging cutthroat trout. Beyond the water, the nearby Lamar Valley provides endless opportunities for wildlife photography and professional-grade birding. Popular activities in the immediate area include:

  • Spotting the Lamar Canyon wolf pack with high-powered optics.
  • Hiking the scenic Slough Creek Trail into the backcountry.
  • Driving the nearby Beartooth Highway for breathtaking alpine views.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and dedicated anglers who value solitude and silence over modern resort conveniences. It is perfect for travelers with smaller rigs who want to completely disconnect from cellular service and immerse themselves in the wilderness. If you are looking for a true backcountry vibe while still having a designated pad for your vehicle, Slough Creek is arguably the most rewarding and authentic choice in Yellowstone.

Every American should go here at least once in their lifetime. I did 2.5 days in the park and saw most of the major sites, but there is still so much more. There's nice easy-going trails and more engaging trails that offer a quieter and more special experience.

For my first time being in Yellowstone National Park. I loved it. I enjoyed the drive the scene of wildlife and wild outdoor nature. I enjoyed hiking in the Walking around seeing the Geiser and the hot pools and the visitor center and old faithful. I’m hoping that one day with me, and my wife will be able to go and visit again And see a little bit more of the park.. Highly recommend

Yellowstone is wild and weird in the best ways! It felt like visiting a different planet with all the geothermal features. Old Faithful is a classic and runs like clockwork, which is pretty cool to see. But the Grand Prismatic Spring was my favorite—those vibrant colors are just incredible. The whole park is on top of a supervolcano, which adds to the excitement. We saw so much wildlife: bison everywhere (watch out, they own the road!), elk, and even a distant bear. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with its massive waterfalls was another highlight. It's a huge park, so plan your route ahead. Lodging inside the park is old school (no TVs, which is fine!), but it lets you stay close to the action. It can get crowded around Old Faithful, but there are plenty of quieter areas to explore. A unique and memorable trip for sure!

Yellowstone National Park is absolutely breathtaking — a true showcase of nature’s power and beauty. From the colorful hot springs and erupting geysers to the serene lakes and vast meadows, every corner feels otherworldly. Wildlife sightings are frequent, especially bison and elk, adding to the park’s wild charm. The park is huge,The views at sunrise and sunset are especially stunning, definitely a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

Yellowstone park, day 1. Stunning September visit to Yellowstone. We only spent 5 hours just inside the west entrance to see a little sample of the park. Could easily stay more days to enjoy the whole park. Sooo beautiful. Blessed to see elk herd and a few bison near dusk.
