Yosemite/Tuolumne Meadows

Overview

Tuolumne Meadows Campground offers a rare opportunity to stay deep within the high country of Yosemite National Park. Situated at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet, this seasonal destination provides a cool, refreshing escape from the summer heat of the valley floor. Visitors can immerse themselves in the subalpine wilderness, surrounded by towering granite peaks and sprawling meadows. It is a quintessential National Park experience, emphasizing a deep connection with nature and a slower pace of life for those looking to escape the crowded Yosemite Valley and experience the High Sierra.

Location & Surroundings

Located along the scenic Tioga Road, the park is positioned just a short drive from the Tioga Pass Entrance near the town of Lee Vining. The surroundings are defined by the rugged beauty of the Eastern Sierra, featuring crystal-clear alpine lakes and ancient glaciated landscapes. The proximity to the Tuolumne River provides a serene, rushing soundtrack to your stay, while the vast meadows offer panoramic views of iconic formations like Cathedral Peak and Unicorn Peak. The area is a hub for high-altitude exploration and serves as a gateway to the park's more remote northern sections.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional dry camping facility, meaning there are no hookups available for RVs. The sites are generally spacious and equipped with paved or dirt pads, heavy-duty bear-resistant food lockers, and fire rings for evening gatherings. Community amenities include flush toilets and seasonal potable water stations. While the park is intentionally rustic, it offers a sense of camaraderie among travelers who appreciate the simplicity of a wilderness setting and the ability to disconnect from digital life. There is also a seasonal general store and grill located nearby for basic supplies and simple meals.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless adventures right outside their campsite. Hikers can tackle the steep ascent of Lembert Dome for breathtaking 360-degree views or enjoy a flatter trek through the lush Lyell Canyon. Just a short drive away, the shimmering waters of Tenaya Lake are perfect for kayaking, swimming, or lakeside picnicking. Additionally, descending the eastern escarpment leads travelers to the unique tufa towers of Mono Lake and the charming services of Lee Vining, providing a stark and beautiful contrast to the high mountain scenery.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize immediate trail access and natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. If you enjoy crisp mountain air, brilliant stargazing under dark skies, and being the first person on the trail in the morning, this location is perfect. It is best suited for adventurous travelers looking to unplug and explore the remote High Sierra, offering a rugged, authentic experience that captures the wild spirit of Yosemite’s high country in a way that few other places can.

Beautiful landscape. The walk to Soda Springs is flat and easy. Just enjoy it.

Definitely a must visit point in the summer. The lush green meadows with the shinny mountains in the backdrop is absolutely stunning. You can always hike to soda spring which is less than a mile if you want something easy. The place looks straight out of some postcard picture. This place is mostly closed in winter due to the snow so make sure to check the forecast before going.

I’ve been here two times. One of the more beautiful places we’ve been. Lots of wildlife and if you like big rocks, waterfalls and views for days this is the place

This place is amazing, one of those places that looks like taken out of science fiction movie. Including the scenery on the way to Toulumne Meadows.
