Yosemite/White Wolf

Overview

White Wolf Campground offers a serene, high-elevation escape nestled within the breathtaking wilderness of Yosemite National Park. Located off the scenic Tioga Road, this seasonal destination sits at approximately 8,000 feet above sea level, providing a cool reprieve from the heat of the valley floor. It is known for its rustic charm and pine-scented air, offering a classic camping experience that emphasizes a deep connection with nature rather than modern luxuries. Because of its elevation, the park usually opens in mid-summer and closes as the first snow arrives in autumn.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the east-west corridor of Highway 120, the campground is positioned between the lush meadows of Tuolumne and the iconic sights of Yosemite Valley. The landscape is characterized by towering lodgepole pines and vibrant subalpine meadows that bloom with wildflowers in late summer. This location serves as a perfect gateway for exploring the High Sierra wilderness, providing a quieter, more secluded alternative to the often-crowded central tourist hubs of the park while remaining accessible to the town of Lee Vining for essential supplies.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Park facility, White Wolf focuses on essential needs for the self-sufficient traveler. The park features approximately 74 sites, though it is important to note there are no hookups available for RVs. Travelers will find potable water and flush toilets on-site, along with picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. Each site is equipped with bear-resistant food lockers, which are mandatory for storing all scented items to ensure both visitor safety and wildlife preservation in this active natural habitat.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves steps away from premier hiking. A short trail leads to Lukens Lake, a pristine body of water surrounded by meadows, while the hike to Harden Lake offers stunning views of the Tuolumne River canyon. A short drive east brings visitors to the granite domes of Olmsted Point and the crystal-clear waters of Tenaya Lake. For those interested in diverse geography, the otherworldly tufa towers of Mono Lake are located just outside the park's eastern entrance near Lee Vining.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers and van lifers who appreciate a primitive, quiet setting. Because sites are generally limited to smaller rigs, typically under 27 to 31 feet, it is best suited for those with compact setups rather than massive motorhomes. It is the perfect match for dedicated hikers, nature photographers, and solitude seekers who want to wake up in the heart of the forest to enjoy a true wilderness retreat away from the bustle of modern life.

Great campground, about 1 hr from Yosemite Valley and 45/50 min from Tuolumne meadows. No water in campgrounds. It is very nice and lots to do.

Nice chill vibe. I stayed on site 9. I crammed a 16ft tent in the 6ft tent location without any issues. No need to buy firewood because there is plenty all around to burn. There is a big rock in front of the parking space so only 1 vehicle can fit.

If you're looking for peace, quiet, and a chance to enjoy true nature, this is the perfect place. It's about a 45–55 minute drive from Yosemite Valley, but it's absolutely worth it. The restrooms are clean and well-maintained. It's also conveniently located near Mono Lake and May Lake. Most importantly, don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent!
