Adirondack/Buck Pond

Overview

Located in the serene northern reaches of the Adirondack Mountains, Buck Pond Campground offers a quintessential wilderness experience for RV travelers. This state-run facility provides a peaceful escape on the shores of two distinct bodies of water: the secluded Buck Pond and the larger Lake Kushaqua. Unlike crowded commercial parks, this destination focuses on the natural beauty of the Adirondack Park, inviting visitors to disconnect and immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the forest while enjoying easy access to pristine waterways.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Vermontville, NY, the park sits within a lush landscape defined by rolling hills and dense pine forests. The geography is unique as it occupies a narrow strip of land between two lakes, providing water views from many areas. The surrounding Franklin County region is known for its quiet roads and extensive trail systems. Travelers will appreciate the remote atmosphere that feels worlds away from the hustle of modern life, even though the vibrant village of Saranac Lake is only a short drive away.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic facility that prioritizes the outdoor experience. While there are no water or electric hookups at the individual sites, the park is well-equipped for comfortable stays. Essential amenities include:

  • A central dump station and potable water spigots throughout the grounds.
  • 116 spacious campsites that accommodate various RV sizes.
  • Clean restrooms with hot showers and flush toilets.
  • A designated sandy swimming beach with a seasonal lifeguard.

There is also a boat launch for non-motorized vessels on Buck Pond and a second launch for motorized boats on Lake Kushaqua.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with exceptional opportunities for paddling and fishing for northern pike and yellow perch. For those looking to explore beyond the water, the Paul Smith's College VIC is nearby, offering miles of interpretive hiking trails through bogs and forests. A short twenty-minute drive brings you to the Olympic village of Lake Placid, where you can explore world-class dining and historic sports venues. Cyclists will also enjoy the nearby multi-use trails that follow old railroad beds.

Who This Park Is Best For

Buck Pond is the ideal choice for self-contained RVers who prefer a rustic, dry camping style over commercial luxury resorts. It is a haven for paddlers and nature photographers who value immediate access to calm waters and diverse wildlife. Families seeking a traditional summer camp vibe with campfire stories and swimming will find it perfect. If you are looking to trade your Wi-Fi signal for a stunning sunset over a quiet lake, this northern New York gem is exactly where you belong.

Spacious campsites in wooded area; felt pretty private. The camp hosts cleaned the fire pit out prior to our stay. Lots of sticks and dried pine needles in/around the site for tinder. Outside the campground there were plenty of homes selling firewood for cheap. No cell service!! Connect with nature instead!!! Was packed on Saturday night and dead on Sunday.

What a great, quiet state park. Nice and flat for bike riding, great water for paddling. Our site (9) had great privacy and a lot of the waterfront sites looked the same. There is a huge sandy public beach area for swimming as well. Friendly staff, clean bathrooms and each bathhouse has a shower and dishwashing station, so it is super convenient. We had a great week and can't wait to go back!

If you want to Camp at a campground under towering pines, on large sites, with mountains and lakes and quiet, and no cell service to distract you, than this is the place.

Pristine primitive style camping. The sites are beautiful wooded with enough seclusion to provide everyone with a private experience. I stayed at the R1 Island campsite which I highly recommend.

Very nice quiet park (at least early in the year, I have not been there during the high season) with nice sites, a beautiful lake for paddling, and a large sand beach. Nice long double track trail for gentle mountain biking. As with any park out in the woods of the Adirondacks, bring your bug spray and nets. No cell coverage to speak of, maybe enough for a text when near the pond or lake, but don't rely on it.

We stayed here the week before labor day. It was very quiet. Coolish temperatures but very few bugs. Each bathroom building had a shower AND a dish washing station. Nice beach area and a good boat launch.

Primitive campground, which means sites are a clearing in the woods with no electric, water or any other amenities on site. But this is what I prefer to what I call "family style" campgrounds, so I liked it. They do have comfort stations with running water and flush toilets. While it was very well maintained and clean, it is very old and could stand a bit of a refresh. Otherwise this is great for those here to enjoy nature as opposed to partying at a campsite. For the latter, you would be better off at a different campground where that is welcomed or common.

We loved camping at Buck Pond. We were on site 18 which was a nice spacious site with trees for our hammocks. When we go again we are hoping to reserve one of the sites that have water access. The kayaking here is amazing! $20 for 24 hours. So peaceful and lots of places to explore. Definitely recommend Buck Pond.
