Ashley/Greens Lake

Overview

Located within the breathtaking Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Ashley/Greens Lake offers a serene escape into the high-country forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 7,400 feet, this campground provides a cool refuge during the warm summer months. It is managed by the Ashley National Forest, offering a traditional camping experience where the focus is on the natural landscape rather than modern luxuries. Visitors are treated to a quiet atmosphere surrounded by towering lodgepole pines and the shimmering waters of the lake itself.

Location & Surroundings

The park is perfectly positioned near the dramatic Red Canyon, one of the most iconic landscapes in Northeast Utah. Just a short drive or walk from the campground, travelers can stand on the rim and look down 1,700 feet to the emerald waters of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The surrounding area is characterized by dense forests and vibrant wildflowers, with frequent wildlife sightings including mule deer and ospreys. Its proximity to Dutch John makes it a convenient base for exploring the rugged northeastern corner of the state.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic destination designed for those who enjoy a back-to-basics approach to RVing. The campground features vault toilets and access to potable water during the peak season, though there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. Each site is typically equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under a dark sky. The sites are generally well-spaced, providing a sense of privacy among the trees. While some sites can accommodate larger rigs, the area is best suited for those looking for a natural forest setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. The Red Canyon Rim Trail is easily accessible and offers some of the most photographed vistas in Utah. For those who enjoy fishing, Greens Lake provides opportunities for quiet angling right from the shore, while the nearby Green River is world-renowned for its blue-ribbon trout fishing and rafting adventures. The Flaming Gorge Dam is another must-see attraction, offering a look into the history and engineering of the massive reservoir.

Who This Park Is Best For

Ashley/Greens Lake is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who prioritize scenery and tranquility over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for photographers and hikers who want immediate access to canyon trails and lake views. If you are a traveler looking to escape the desert heat and enjoy the scent of pine needles and crisp mountain air, this park provides the perfect high-altitude retreat. It is best suited for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, unplugged environment away from the crowds.

Negative: Lots of pot holes in the campground driveway that are feet wide and 6+ inches deep, drive with care. The small fishing lake requires you to have a special permit for $7 if over 12 years old, under are free. Not gonna break the bank but one would think a state licence would be sufficient. Positive: Plenty of space for tents/RVs, 2 bathroom are centralized for all. Water spickets are all over and easy to access. There is a very nice store with anything you may have forgot to include ice cream and rentals for the small lake.

Nice large and small camping areas. Easy hiking trails with great views. We had some beautiful sunsets. Roads need some work but the spaces look well tended.

Greens Lake Campground was peaceful, clean, scenic and not busy. Plenty of fresh water and the bathrooms were clean. Easy walk to Red Canyon lodge store and restaurant. Only downsides would be the lake is an extra charge of $5/day to fish (because it’s owned by Red Canyon Lodge) and the multiple potholes in the road. But on the plus side of that it does slow people down.

We really enjoyed the lake. The campground was nice, but we reserved site #009 because the map showed this site to be on the lake. It was NOT. In was on the inside of the loop. We had some shade at our site, which was good as the sun is very intense. Other sites have no shade. if you want to camp nearest the lake, select sites #7 or #8. Please note, some of the photos of Greens Lake on Google do NOT depict the actual lake. These are the pics of the REAL Greens Lake.

Great campground. Sites scattered under pines. Managed by a contractor and host onsite. $22/ $11 senior. Lake is non-motorized paddle craft only and a catch n release via permission from the adjacent Red Canyon Lodge. Water spigots scattered around, dumpsters, and vault toilets. Cell signal was good for verizon, att, TMobile. Some sites can be reserved and others are FF. Total of 19 sites and one group site. Campground loop road is a bit patchy and has some potholes.

So unfortunately we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when reserving a camp site at this location.. Saying that we drove 4 hours in a toyota Corolla to find out this is NOT a place for small cars ! Luckly we found a good place to pull aside and camp. But for anyone looking to reserve here at green lake i recommend taking a vehicle that suites outdoor and high altitude activities. We still had a great time and the forest was clean and so beautiful!
