Au Sable/Mio Pond
Overview
Au Sable/Mio Pond, located within the scenic Oscoda County Park system, offers a tranquil escape for RVers looking to immerse themselves in Northern Michigan’s natural beauty. Situated on a peaceful stretch of the Au Sable River backwaters, this destination provides a perfect blend of forest seclusion and water-based recreation. It serves as an ideal base camp for exploring the expansive wilderness of the region while maintaining a relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere that captures the classic Michigan camping experience.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Mio, Michigan, the park is nestled deep within the Huron-Manistee National Forest, a vast landscape characterized by jack pine and hardwood forests. The "pond" itself is a sprawling 1,000-acre reservoir created by the Mio Dam, providing a much calmer water experience than the swifter currents found downstream. This unique geography creates a lush habitat for local wildlife and offers sweeping, elevated views of the water from many of the well-shaded campsites.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering numerous sites with electric hookups and easy access to fresh water stations. Guests benefit from a well-maintained infrastructure that includes modern restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station for self-contained units. For those traveling with watercraft, the on-site boat launch provides direct access to Mio Pond, while the inclusive picnic areas and playground make it easy for families to enjoy long afternoons together outdoors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is never far away, as the Mio area is famous for world-class trout fishing and recreational paddling. The Au Sable River is a premier destination for canoeing and kayaking, with several local liveries providing easy access to the water. Land-based explorers can head to the nearby ORV trails or seek out the rare Kirtland’s Warbler in its protected nesting grounds. The small-town charm of Mio offers local eateries and essential supply shops just a short drive from the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize location and natural access over high-end luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a traditional "Up North" camping trip where the focus is on campfires and water activities. If you are a traveler who appreciates quiet evenings by the water and a dark sky perfect for stargazing, this park will suit your travel style perfectly.

We love the Mio Scenic Overlook. My husband proprosed to me 9 years ago. Consumers Powers seeing how they own this does need to trim the trees in front of it. They are starting to block the scenery.

Pretty place. The Mio Pond along with the Mio Dam have a unique feel. Nice place to just hang out, throw a line in, or access the Au Sable, Michigan's most beautiful river, in my humble opinion.
