Babcock
Overview
Babcock State Park stands as one of the most picturesque destinations in West Virginia, spanning over 4,127 acres of rugged mountain beauty. Located in Clifftop, this park is best known for the Glade Creek Grist Mill, a fully functional replica that attracts photographers from across the globe. For RV travelers, the park offers a peaceful retreat where the sounds of rushing water and rustling leaves replace the noise of the highway.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in the heart of Fayette County, the park is situated on the rim of the New River Gorge. The surrounding landscape is characterized by deep canyons, mountain streams, and dense hardwood forests that transform into a vibrant tapestry of color during the autumn months. Its proximity to the nation’s newest national park makes it a prime basecamp for exploring the high-altitude vistas and dramatic terrain of the Appalachian Mountains.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Babcock features 52 sites, with 28 electric hookups available for RVers. While the setting is rustic, the park provides essential conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay:
- Central bathhouse with hot showers and laundry facilities.
- A sanitary dump station and accessible water filling points.
- Access to Babcock Lake for seasonal boat rentals and fishing.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find over 20 miles of diverse hiking trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. Just a short drive away is the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, where visitors can experience world-class whitewater rafting or walk the catwalk beneath the famous New River Gorge Bridge. Within Babcock, the nature center provides educational insights into the local flora, fauna, and the history of the Appalachian wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
Babcock is an ideal match for travelers who prioritize natural scenery and tranquility over high-end resort luxuries. It is a haven for landscape photographers and birdwatchers looking to immerse themselves in the wild beauty of West Virginia. Because many sites are shaded and private, it is perfect for those seeking a traditional camping experience where the focus remains on the great outdoors and family-friendly adventures.

Nice state park, clean with plenty of hiking trails. There was a good amount of families there but it never got crowded. There is also a “almost heaven” swing there. Added bonus-If you hike the Diamond in the sky trail, be sure not to cheat and take the easy way up!

I am not a camping type girl. I love hotels with amenities and I enjoy having a TV, that being said...this was one of my favorite vacations to simply recharge and "be". The park itself is beautiful. Laid out very nicely with hiking for all levels. The paths were clearly marked and some of the views were breathtaking. We stayed in Cabin 3 which I believe has the most steps to get to...65! Its not for the faint of heart or the heavy packer!! The Cabin was super clean and stocked with everything you'd need for a pleasant stay. Wood was stacked nearby if needed and they even brought us towels since we stayed more than 2 nights. A hidden gem when looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and just hike and listen to river. 5 star all the way!

I've wanted to come here for years. On one of huddy and i's trips this summer in the Summersville area my husband surprised me with coming to this park. We're checking off waterfalls in west virginia. There were 2 here that we needed. So we got to do that. Of course buy stuff at the gift shop. Take a couple pictures at the west virginia swing. It was the 1st swing we've gotten to do that. So that was awesome! We took pictures of the Glade Creek Grist Mill. It's just as beautiful in person as I've seen online. I was so happy that I was seeing it in person! We looked around in the mill. It was really neat! We want to come back and do some hiking. I'll be sure to update my post when we do.

Really enjoyed our 1 day adventure in Babcock SP (Oct 14). Of course you have to stop and take a few photos of the Gristmill (around 8:45-9am.. a little fog but nice, ambient light). We did about a 6ish mile hiking loop from the top of Skyline trail down to Rocky trail to narrow gauge trail (stopping at Manns creek falls) to ridge top to old pond and then back to skyline. Wonderful loop if you are up for it! Thought this was a beautiful park. Glad we stopped here as park of our New River Gorge NP trip.

We saw some beautiful photos for the Babcock State Park during fall foliage, so we planned for the visit. It’s definitely a beautiful and tranquil park. We didn’t particularly go on any hiking trails and would love to explore in the future. However, just simply a short walk from the parking lot to see the mill is already a great experience.
