Bald Eagle (Russel P. Letterman Campground)

Overview

Bald Eagle State Park features the Russell P. Letterman Campground, a premier destination for RVers seeking a balance between modern convenience and natural beauty. This sprawling park in Howard, Pennsylvania, is centered around the massive Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir. The campground is well-regarded for its spacious, paved sites and a thoughtful layout that provides a sense of privacy amidst the towering trees. Unlike many rustic state park facilities, this location offers a high standard of comfort for travelers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, the park is tucked between the Bald Eagle Mountain ridge and the Allegheny Plateau. The landscape is dominated by the 1,730-acre lake, which serves as a stunning focal point for all park activities. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by lush hardwoods and rolling fields, offering a peaceful retreat that feels secluded despite being easily accessible from major transit routes like I-80. The scenic mountain vistas provide a dramatic backdrop for every campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

The Russell P. Letterman Campground offers exceptional facilities designed specifically for modern RVs. Many sites feature full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer connections, which is a significant advantage for those staying several days. The park includes the following features:

  • Spacious **paved pads** that accommodate large motorhomes and trailers.
  • Modern restrooms with heated floors and warm showers.
  • A large playground and volleyball courts for family recreation.

Each site is also equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity here. The reservoir is a hotspot for boating and fishing, with multiple launch ramps and a dedicated swimming beach for summer fun. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the park boasts over 14 miles of hiking trails that wind through diverse forest habitats. Additionally, the park is a short drive from State College, home to Penn State University, which offers a unique mix of cultural events, dining, and collegiate sports for those looking to explore the local area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for families and nature lovers who want a comfortable experience within a state park setting. Because of the paved level pads and full hookup options, it is particularly well-suited for big-rig owners who often find primitive state park sites difficult to navigate. It is also a fantastic choice for avid anglers and birdwatchers who want to spend their days on the water or exploring the migratory paths of local wildlife in a serene environment.

As for the campground its horrible! No seriously its amazing, and the sites are so level you practically don't need anything to set up, just park and thats it. The sites are spacious too. Shower house is clean and there's a wash sink out front for dishes if you tent. Lots of pet friendly site, Cabins and Yurts. Trails to walk and they are beautifully groomed and maintained. So don't go there, that way there will be a site open for me! Very close to historic Curtain Village, must see and self tours are free. Town of Howard is close by with nice pizza shop and a small restaurant. An ice cream shop right up the road - The Twin Kiss, ice cream and food also.

One of the best camping sites in the area. Clean and well maintained restrooms , wash area , showers are clean , camp sites are clean, as mentioned in website , safe , people are very friendly. Located near the road so you may hear road noise sometimes. Bonus of star gazing if you come here on clear sunny day, but keep it in mind the temperature along with the water body near makes a higher humidity. Neverthelss the location of the sites are absolute beauty. Staffs make sure the clean sites and people has to follow it 🙂. There are few shopping spots within couple of miles. But if you want WAL-MARt it is 15 from the campsite. For record we stayed in sycamore

This is an excellent campground to relax at. While not being totally secluded in trees, you do still have trees around you with a little bit of shade offering you a nice woodsy feeling. The sites are fairly level and paved with a small Stone area, including a picnic table and fire ring. Like most state parks. This has been an enjoyable camping experience. It appears to be a well-maintained campground.

We have come to love Bald Eagle State Park. It is a very friendly and quiet place to camp. Within a mile from the camping area is a nice boat launch with boat rental and a beach area with pavilions for group day use. The camping sites are large and well kept. You are not very close to your neighbor campers. And the bathroom/shower houses are kept immaculate by DCNR staff. There are maybe 12 sites with full hook-ups and many more with electricity only. And prices are very reasonable. Almost forgot to tell you, each pad is paved for easy use.

Our second time here and have to say it's a very nice campground with spacious sites. Would have given 5 stars if there was a little more shade. Could be brutal on a hot, sunny day. Very quite with nice rest rooms. We will be back!

Non pet loop. Most camp site are roomy. Few site with sewer. Most have electric, 30 amp. But most sites are not level due to site built on a hill. Dump station easy to get to coming or going. If you have a pet make sure you reserve in the pet loop. Park has a beach and boat launch.
