Beaverhead/Miner Lake
Overview
Situated deep within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, Miner Lake Campground offers a secluded escape for travelers seeking a genuine mountain experience. Located near the small community of Jackson, MT, this rustic destination provides a peaceful alternative to crowded commercial parks. Visitors often come here to reconnect with nature amidst the soaring peaks of the Beaverhead Mountains, where the air is crisp and the scenery is pristine. It is the quintessential Montana backcountry experience for those who love the woods.
Location & Surroundings
The park is positioned on the shores of Miner Lake, an alpine body of water surrounded by dense evergreen forests and wildflower meadows. Reaching the site requires navigating Skinner Meadows Road, a gravel path that winds through the Big Hole Valley. The surrounding landscape is characterized by its high-altitude beauty and isolation, making it a prime spot for spotting moose and elk grazing in the early morning fog near the water's edge.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers should note that this is a primitive dry camping facility without electrical, water, or sewer hookups. The amenities focus on the essentials to preserve the natural character of the forest:
- Vault toilets and seasonal hand-pumped potable water.
- Individual sites featuring metal fire rings and picnic tables.
- A gravel boat launch suitable for non-motorized watercraft like kayaks.
Sites are generally spacious but vary in levelness, making it best suited for smaller RVs or experienced boondockers who bring their own power sources.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with many visitors spending their days on the water or exploring the rugged terrain. Key activities include:
- Fishing for trout and mountain whitefish in the clear lake waters.
- Hiking the Miner Lakes Trail to reach higher elevations.
- Visiting the historic Jackson Hot Springs for a relaxing soak nearby.
The area is also a gateway to the Big Hole National Battlefield, offering a poignant look at regional history within a short driving distance.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize solitude and natural beauty over modern conveniences. It appeals to those who enjoy off-the-grid living and are prepared for a rugged, high-elevation environment. If you are looking for a quiet backcountry basecamp to explore the Montana wilderness and do not mind the lack of cell service, Miner Lake is a perfect fit for your adventurous travel style.

Nice campground but no water or trash services. Bear boxes for food storage. Great place for showers in Jackson, The Bunkhouse Hotel

This is a great campground. There are plenty of good sites and tree cover. There is a hiking trail connected to the site. Other than being a bit of a pain to get to, this a very good camping spot.

Wildly close to Jackson and to the great CDT. Miner lake is a wonderful jumping off point to trails higher up and on to the divide.
