Big Ridge

Overview

Big Ridge State Park is a heavily wooded 3,687-acre retreat located on the southern shore of Norris Lake in East Tennessee. Established in the 1930s as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s recreational development, the park is steeped in history and New Deal-era craftsmanship. It offers a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of the forest replace the hum of the highway, providing a classic Tennessee camping experience for those who value nature, shade, and regional heritage.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in Maynardville, Tennessee, the park is situated within the Appalachian Ridge and Valley province. The surrounding landscape is defined by steep, narrow ridges and lush, deep valleys, creating a secluded feel despite being just 25 miles north of Knoxville. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by the tranquil waters of Norris Lake, which provides miles of jagged shoreline and plenty of opportunities for scenic exploration along the water's edge.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 50 campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, accommodating RVs and trailers up to 35 feet in length. While the sites are rustic and nestled among mature trees, visitors have access to two modern bathhouses with hot showers and a convenient central dump station. Guests can enjoy the sand swimming beach, multiple picnic pavilions, sand volleyball courts, and a boat ramp that provides easy access to the lake for kayaks and motorized vessels.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 15 miles of hiking trails that weave through dry ridges and hollows, leading to historic sites like the Norton Cemetery and Sharp’s Fort. Norris Lake is a primary draw for fishing and boating, while the park’s historic grist mill and dam offer a glimpse into the region’s past. For a change of pace, the city of Knoxville is a short drive away, offering urban amenities, museums, and diverse dining options.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, traditional camping environment over a high-traffic commercial resort. Because of the winding roads and heavily wooded terrain, it is best suited for small to medium-sized RVs rather than oversized big rigs. Those seeking a blend of outdoor recreation and historical significance will find this park to be a rewarding destination for a weekend getaway. It is a perfect fit for campers who want to disconnect and enjoy authentic Appalachian scenery.

We did road roulette and found this place. For a Saturday it was almost empty! Beautiful views! And super clean.

This is my local State Park and by local, I mean next door neighbor. I'm no expert but this may be the best State Park behind the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I think I prefer Big Ridge due to the little traffic and overall layout. Plus, we have a swimming hole. 'Nuff said.

I had a perfect first visit here. It’s great for day trip. I hiked , picnicked and swam. I really enjoyed the Big Ridge Lake trail as well as Loyston Point. I saw deer, turtles, and herring. The swimming area had places to grill and picnic. The restroom facilities were very clean.

Spent five days here and could have easily spent more! This campground offers so much! We rented a kayak and fishing boat one day, swam at their beach almost every night, took beautiful pics next to their grist mill at sunset and the list goes on. We didn’t even scratch the surface on what they have to offer. Their campsites are spacious and bath houses are clean. Their wood burns great, so buy without hesitation. Many times you go to campgrounds and their wood doesn’t burn, not the case here. The campground is quiet and peaceful (at least our experience). We will definitely be back!!

Nice park, well maintained. The bathrooms and showers are really nice. Definitely a place to visit near the water and access to several boat ramps in the area. There are tennis courts and a basketball court as well as a large playground for the kids. The office has some cool trinkets and shirts for purchase. There is also 15 or so mountain biking/hiking trails nearby at Loyston Point.

Very clean and pretty campground. The bath houses were nice as well. The road to get to it is extremely curvy but fun to drive! (use caution of course) but if you're looking for a nice family outing, id recommend this place!

The trails are well signed. Some of the trails have fallen trees across them and they tend to be rocky with rugs and roots in places. Sharps Station is very interesting and worth hiking to. A lot of historic significance here with folk lore to match.

No stroller accessible trails, but you can walk from visitor center to grist mill on pavement. Really lovely trails to hike though if you’re baby wearing. Many mushrooms and roots and trees and centipedes and snakes and all kind of glorious nature. Here’s pics of the maps of the trails.
