Bighorn/Boulder Park

Overview

Bighorn/Boulder Park is a tranquil, rustic retreat nestled deep within the Bighorn National Forest. Unlike busy commercial resorts, this Forest Service campground offers a genuine primitive camping experience that prioritizes quietude and natural beauty. Located at a high elevation, it serves as a refreshing escape during the hot summer months, providing a perfect base for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the rugged Wyoming wilderness without the distractions of modern life.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the breathtaking Ten Sleep Canyon, the park is surrounded by towering lodgepole pine forests and expansive alpine meadows. The drive along the Cloud Peak Skyway offers dramatic views of ancient limestone cliffs and snow-capped mountain peaks. Travelers frequently find themselves sharing the landscape with local wildlife, including deer and elk, as the park sits in a serene mountain environment far from urban centers and noisy highway corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional USFS site, visitors should arrive prepared for a dry-camping experience. The park provides essential amenities such as vault toilets and potable water, but it does not offer electrical or sewer hookups. Each individual site features the following:

  • Solid picnic tables and fire rings for outdoor cooking
  • Spacious gravel pads suitable for various RV lengths
  • Natural landscaping that provides significant privacy

The site layouts provide excellent separation between neighbors, making it easy to feel like you have your own private slice of the Wyoming forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for mountain adventure just steps from their site. The crystal-clear Ten Sleep Creek is a premier destination for fly fishing, while miles of surrounding forest trails invite hikers to explore the Bighorn range. A short drive down the canyon leads to the world-famous dolomite rock climbing walls that draw athletes from across the globe. For a slower pace, the nearby Powder River Pass offers incredible scenic overlooks and photography opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is tailor-made for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prefer a remote, backcountry atmosphere. It is the ideal choice for travelers who value solitude and a direct connection to nature over resort-style luxuries. Because of its elevated mountain climate, it remains a top pick for those looking to beat the summer heat. If your goal is to disconnect and enjoy dark sky stargazing, Bighorn/Boulder Park will certainly fit your travel style.

Beautiful campground at elevation in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, west of Buffalo. In the high 40’s overnight in August. Camped next to Ten Sleep creek. Very nice walk south out of the campground along the creek—saw a moose. Site #28 was especially nice. Water from a pump and vault toilets, but no showers. The host Audrey was very helpful. No cell service.

The campsite was well kept and the people at the lodge were very nice. The creek was beautiful and the campsites themselves were spacious and comfortable. Can’t give it higher than a 3 star because the camp host Audrey constantly harassed and insulted us multiple times, as well as going through our stuff when we were gone and disturbing us at night. Wouldn’t go back until she’s gone.

What an amazing campground! Thank you so much to the host! Those bathrooms were amazing! Easy to get around and access sites. I do highly recommend!

We enjoyed our stay last August. We were absolutely thrilled to have a young bull moose come right past our camp site. Would give it 5 stars. If there would have been a host present and firewood to buy. Thankfully our neighbors had a Milwaukee chainsaw and we were able to cut up some downed trees.

Stayed here 2 days and it rained most of the time so didn't have the best experience but absolutely love the mountain stream 🏞️

We have camped here a few times. Sites on outside of loop are best - shaded. People drives way to fast in this campsite which is not good given the high numbers of kids riding bikes and playing in the camp. Boulder Park is close to many streams for fishing.

Really great spot to camp. 1st come, 1st served type deal. Fire pits with grills and picnic tables at each site. Bathrooms were clean and didn't stink like you'd expect from a potter-potty type setup. Some sites are better for tent camping than others, as there's a lot of gravel. We had to pitch out tent on mostly gravel but it was manageable and we still slept well. The camp host was super sweet and you can tell she really cares about the campground. There's some great trails around the area and you can easily forage for wood if needed. No cellphone service though but that's to be expected in the mountains.

This was a lovely small campground. We were in site 23 with the creek running high behind us for great ambience. It was very sunny in the afternoon, no shade. There are moose in and around the campground. The vault toilets were very clean, had hand sanitizer and a motion detector light. No cell phone coverage is available. There is an old road that is no longer maintained, runs along the creek for a nice hike.
