Bighorn Canyon/Afterbay

Overview

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area offers a unique escape at the Afterbay Campground near Fort Smith, Montana. This park provides a quiet, managed environment for travelers seeking to explore the dramatic landscapes of the Bighorn River corridor. It serves as a rugged home base for those who appreciate the vastness of the American West and the simplicity of public land camping. Unlike commercial resorts, this area emphasizes the raw beauty of the Montana wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned along the Afterbay Reservoir, just downstream from the massive Yellowtail Dam. Surrounded by the striking limestone cliffs of Bighorn Canyon and the rolling hills of the Crow Indian Reservation, the setting is defined by high-desert vegetation and wide-open skies. The proximity to the water ensures a refreshing breeze and frequent sightings of local wildlife like bighorn sheep, osprey, and mule deer wandering through the sagebrush.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Park Service facility, the focus here is on natural preservation rather than luxury hookups. The campground provides essential features for self-contained travelers:

  • Paved RV pads which provide level surfaces for rigs of various lengths
  • Potable water stations and vault toilets available during the peak season
  • Individual fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor cooking

The park also features boat ramp access specifically for the Afterbay, allowing easy entry for those looking to fish or paddle the calmer waters below the main dam.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the world-class fly fishing on the Bighorn River, known globally for its prolific trout populations. Boating enthusiasts can head to the nearby Ok-A-Beh Marina to access the deep, turquoise waters of Bighorn Lake for a day of cruising. History buffs will enjoy visiting the Yellowtail Dam Visitor Center, while hikers can explore trails that offer breathtaking overlooks of the 1,000-foot canyon walls carved by the river.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a peaceful, rustic experience over a crowded resort atmosphere. It is a premier destination for dedicated anglers and bird watchers who want to be steps away from the water. If you enjoy boondocking-style comfort with the added benefit of a paved pad and stunning scenery, this Montana gem is a perfect fit for your next fishing trip or mountain exploration.

Nice campground and so close to Yellowtail with great boat access. It's fun and unnerving to be close to water with my little kids, but they LOVED IT. Also, saw a bear near the campground. Again, we love the nature of camping, but it can keep a parent on their toes. Awesome ppl camp there and were watchful too.
