Bighorn Canyon/Barry's Landing

Overview

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area offers a dramatic landscape where the high desert meets the deep blue waters of Bighorn Lake. The area around Barry's Landing is renowned for its sheer limestone cliffs and rugged terrain. This is not your typical resort; it is a destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the raw natural beauty of the American West. Visitors are often struck by the profound silence and the immense scale of the canyon walls surrounding the campsites, providing a powerful sense of place.

Location & Surroundings

Situated within the vast Bighorn Canyon system, the surroundings are characterized by the Pryor Mountains and the deep carvings of the Bighorn River. While the recreation area spans the border, the environment around Barry's Landing provides a gateway to the lake's stunning southern reaches. The landscape is a vibrant mix of juniper-covered hills and 1,000-foot cliffs that change color as the sun moves across the sky. It is a remote location that rewards travelers with incredible vistas and a true sense of isolation.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping experience here is intentionally simple to preserve the natural environment. Barry's Landing and the nearby Trail Creek area provide primitive RV sites that are ideal for self-contained units. Key features of the park include:

  • Vault toilets and centralized trash collection areas
  • Individual picnic tables and established fire rings at each site
  • Access to a paved boat launch for lake exploration

There are no hookups or potable water stations available at these specific sites, so travelers should arrive with full fresh water tanks to enjoy their stay comfortably.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The water is the star of the show, making boating and fishing the most popular activities. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck with walleye and trout in the cool depths of the lake. On land, hikers can explore the Sullivan's Knob Trail, which offers a unique acoustic experience where you can hear your echo bounce off the canyon walls. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep a sharp eye out for the Pryor Mountain wild horses and bighorn sheep that frequently roam the ridges above the park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for off-grid enthusiasts who value scenery and solitude over modern luxuries. Because the sites are primitive, it is best suited for RVers with solar power or generators who are comfortable without water or electric connections. If your travel style involves early morning paddles on calm water or photography in a high-desert wilderness, Barry's Landing offers a quiet escape that feels worlds away from the busy highway corridors and crowded commercial parks.

Great place 2 camp, but a little spendo @ $18/day. Bear country so bear proof boxes @ sites. Sm stream near sites, and clean bathrooms @ easy walk. Friendly host & fellow campers. We had a ball. P.S It only took us 1 1/2 hrs taking Shell Canyon.

Great campground for tent camping. Quiet, every site has a bear box, easy access to trash disposal, very clean bathrooms. Just be advised you will need to haul in your own water.

No water, electric, sewer, desolate, dry and no shade. Very bad place for children to camp.

Found out the hard way.... drove all the up there after seeing ( Barry's Landing Campsite) it was a free, non water site.... 18$ a night from April to October... NOT a FREE camping site which was posted on the web page.... on the other hand the smoke and wild fire that was racing over the northern mountain range. It took us 30 min to break down and 45 to make it back to Lovell, Wy. This all at 10 pm at night right at True sunset. What a beautiful redish glow of the flames busting over the mountain top and glow of smoke. Could still see the flames all the way in Lovell, Wy. What a trip on our 1st wild fire.

Great access to the reservoir, and a nice little (free) camping spot nearby.
