Bitterroot/Warm Springs

Overview

Located in the heart of the Bitterroot National Forest, Bitterroot/Warm Springs offers a rustic and tranquil escape for RVers. It is situated along the banks of the East Fork of the Bitterroot River, providing a peaceful backdrop of flowing water and towering pine trees. Unlike developed resorts, this area emphasizes a connection to nature and a slower pace of life, making it a favorite for those traveling through the scenic corridors of Southwest Montana. The park provides a primitive yet inviting atmosphere that allows visitors to truly disconnect and enjoy the mountain air.

Location & Surroundings

Sula, Montana, is a small community that serves as a gateway to the high country. The park is nestled near U.S. Highway 93, yet it feels remarkably secluded thanks to the surrounding mountain peaks. Visitors are surrounded by the Bitterroot Mountains, which offer dramatic views and immediate access to rugged wilderness. The elevation provides cooler summer temperatures, creating a refreshing atmosphere for outdoor enthusiasts escaping the valley heat. The dense forest canopy provides ample shade and privacy for many of the sites within the grounds.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service managed site, the focus is on simplicity and natural beauty. You will find spacious campsites that can accommodate various RV lengths, though it is always wise to check for specific site dimensions before arrival. Standard features include fire rings, picnic tables, and access to vault toilets. While it lacks the luxury of high-speed Wi-Fi or full hookups, the proximity to natural mineral water and the river provides a unique opportunity for relaxation. Seasonal hand-pumped water is typically available for those needing to top off their supplies during their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a haven for fly-fishing enthusiasts who frequent the East Fork of the Bitterroot River for its abundant trout populations. Hiking trails are plentiful, with paths leading deep into the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. History buffs will appreciate being near the Ross’ Hole area, a site of historical significance for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Additionally, the Lost Trail Powder Mountain area is just a short drive south, offering panoramic views of the Idaho-Montana border and access to sections of the Continental Divide Trail.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over digital connectivity. If you enjoy boondocking-style amenities with the added structure of a designated campground, you will feel right at home. It is perfect for nature photographers and anglers looking for easy water access right from their doorstep. Travelers seeking a quiet, authentic Montana experience while exploring the beauty of the mountain passes will find this to be a highlight of their journey through the Treasure State.

What a cool spot! I had a nice quiet tent camping spot, the owner was great and I love the hot springs powered pool and hot tub. It’s rustic and a total gem. There’s wifi in the pool area. I was a cyclist passing through in late August on a long-distance trip and there’s nothing better than soaking in the pool before taking on those MT mountain passes. The restaurant was closed when I arrived, so bring your own food.

Lost Trail Hot Springs is a nice little rustic place to stay. We have been here three times through the years. No it is not a luxury place to stay if that's what you want. It's out in the woods and very peaceful. We take our ATVs up there and ride in the hills. Then we take a dip in the pool and hot tub. The rooms have a fridge, microwave, and little two cup coffee maker. Bring food, paper plates, etc and stuff to drink that can fit in a small fridge. I think one of the rooms does have a stove if you rent that one or you can travel to places like Darby to eat. No tv to watch so rent a movie at office or bring your own movies to watch on DVD player in your room. This little place is more like living off the grid. I love sitting on the porch of the cabin we rent and enjoy the sound of birds, the creek and just the view of wilderness. Ya this place might not be for everyone because it is old and rustic and like being off the grid but I enjoy it and will definitely return once a year or more when I get the chance.

This was such a cool stop! The hot springs pool was so clean and perfect temperature. The hot tub and sauna was a nice touch. Then we ate lunch on the picnics tables! I want to come back

Great for families with small children, but I will not be back. Plastic cover over large pool makes it so there is no fresh air circulation. Strong unpleasant pungent damp smell throughout. The large pool is barely bath water temperature and the “hot pool” is not hot.

Rustic cabins and a hot springs pool and hot tub. The cabins are warm, clean and basic - stove and microwave, but no plates, pans or silverware. The pool is warm; the changing rooms are clean, the facilities are somewhat elderly but functional.

Only ever used the pool and hot tub. It's one of my favorites. Low key family run place. Right at the bottom of the mountain from lost trail ski resort.

Nice place to camp out. Lots of shade under old growth trees. The outhouse is a little rough. No restaurant or bar. No alcohol for sale. Hot Springs were nice. We'd camp there again if the outhouse was better.

We loved this place. We rented cabin 8 since it was dog friendly. The cabin is super cozy! The hot spring is so relaxing. My only issue was that there was nowhere to have a fire, so we had to drive a bit to get food. If you are planning a stay here, make sure you bring lots of food that does not need to be cooked. Other than that, it is amazing. We will be back!

Quiet and peaceful, creek sounds nice and kills the highway noises that drift in the canyon.
