Black Hills/Bismarck Lake

Overview

Bismarck Lake Campground offers a tranquil retreat within the sprawling Black Hills National Forest. Unlike the bustling commercial parks often found in this region, this destination prioritizes a deep connection with nature and a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Situated at an elevation of 5,000 feet, the park provides a scenic mountain escape surrounded by dense forests and shimmering waters. It is a place where the rustle of pine needles replaces the noise of the city.

Location & Surroundings

Located just five miles east of the historic town of Custer, South Dakota, the park is perfectly positioned for exploring the southern Black Hills. The campground sits along the eastern shoreline of Bismarck Lake, offering stunning views and cool breezes through the ponderosa pines. Its secluded feel and scenic topography make it a favorite for travelers who prefer the sounds of the forest over proximity to major highways and city centers.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic facility designed for those who enjoy traditional camping and self-sufficiency. The well-spaced sites include sturdy picnic tables and fire rings, providing the perfect setup for evening campfires under the stars. While there are no electric hookups available at the sites, guests have access to clean vault toilets and potable drinking water. The park also features a boat launch for kayaks and canoes, facilitating easy access to the lake.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park serves as a gateway to iconic landmarks. You are only minutes away from the granite spires and wildlife of Custer State Park and the scenic Needles Highway. History buffs and sightseers can easily reach Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Crazy Horse Memorial within a short drive. On-site, visitors enjoy birdwatching, shoreline fishing for panfish, and exploring the Bismarck Lake Trail, which offers a gentle loop around the water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who value privacy and natural beauty over modern luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for those seeking a serene mountain home base while touring the Black Hills. If you prefer a rustic experience where the focus remains on starlit nights and morning lake views rather than resort-style entertainment, this national forest campground will perfectly suit your travel style.

We camped here July 2025. Site 7 is perfect for tent camping! We were able to fit 2 6-person tents on this site. There's great lake access near all sites for fishing and paddleboarding, and our kids loved climbing all the huge boulders here. Our site was a little close to site 6, especially considering how spread out most of the others are, but it didn't bother us and our neighbors were chill. Very close to the vault toilet and water spigot. The camp host was wonderful and super friendly. The location is right in the middle of all the fun stuff to do in the Black Hills. Our favorite campsite ever!

This place is why we all need to support Federal funding for recreation sites. Beautiful campground, spacious sites, just $10 night (I would support doubling this if spent on trash cans (there are none) and other support). Only about 8 or 10 sites are open though most of the year as the other part of the campground is closed until memorial through Labor Day. This is a shame because it's a beautiful place. No reservations so you have to take your chances but there's a lot of camping in the area. There is one thing that I don't think is appropriate though. The Bob Marshall fishing organization and camp has built a plastic dock on the lake. With a federal permit which is great. But even when and not in use, they have a sign that says that the public cannot go on to that dock. Even though it is Federal land. The federal government should not allow that. If you want to have a dock on the people's land, great but you should not deny access to the public. The Bob Marshall organization should consider changing that sign to be a good Steward of public land.

Beautiful spot. Saw amazing sun sets every night. The lake is lovely. The kids had so much fun exploring. There is a nesting pair of bald eagles and beavers. The hosts were amazing, so helpful, friendly and kind. This was our kids' first camping experience in a tent. It was just perfect!

Awesome camp. Very quiet. Within custer state park. Very close to my Rushmore and Sylvan lake. Every campsite has a fire pit and a picnic table, also they have firewood for sale.

We showed up on the spot and got a great campsite complete with picnic table and campfire pit. A clean vault toilet was close by, as was a hydrant. Couldn't beat the price. The place was beautiful!! A lake with a nice boardwalk and dock, nature, quiet... Couldn't ask for more!
