Bogue Chitto
Overview
Bogue Chitto State Park offers a refreshing departure from the flat coastal plains typically associated with Louisiana. Located near Franklinton, this state park is characterized by its rolling hills and varied ecological landscapes. Travelers will find a blend of bottomland hardwood forests and upland pines, providing a scenic backdrop for a weekend getaway or a longer nature retreat. It is a place where the air feels lighter and the pace of life slows down to match the diverse ecosystems surrounding the campsites.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Washington Parish, the park is defined by its proximity to the Bogue Chitto River. This winding waterway is the heart of the park's recreation, offering scenic vistas at every bend. One of the most unique geological features in the state, known as Fricke’s Cave, is located within the park boundaries. Despite the name, it is actually a series of stunning sandstone spires created by erosion, offering a desert-like landscape hidden deep within the lush Louisiana greenery.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for RVers, featuring 81 improved campsites with water and electrical hookups. Many sites are designed to accommodate large rigs, providing ample space for slide-outs and outdoor setups. On-site facilities include modern bathhouses, laundry stations, and a reliable on-site dump station. For families traveling during warmer months, the large water playground and splash pad offer a perfect way to cool off after a day of exploring the wooded trails.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. Guests can spend their days tubing and kayaking down the river or fishing in the 14-acre upland pond. The park also boasts over 14 miles of multi-use trails catering to mountain bikers and hikers alike. If you are visiting in the fall, the nearby town of Franklinton hosts the historic Washington Parish Fair, which is known as one of the largest county fairs in the country.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for active families and nature photographers looking for diverse landscapes that break the Louisiana mold. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy water-based activities but also want the challenge of hilly hiking and biking terrain. Whether you are looking for a serene riverfront experience or a basecamp for rugged outdoor adventure, Bogue Chitto provides a versatile environment that caters to both relaxation and exploration.

Love the hiking 🥾 areas. Bike trails are well maintained and serviced. The house trails and rentals are easy. My horse was gentle. I'm not a horseman but I'm happy to be riding.

This place is great to spend the weekend or the week. Plenty to see and do. Trials, swim in the river, small waterpark, with a nice playground for the kids. Play on the beach. This was my first time going and will definitely go back. Will also be bringing my golf cart next time.

This was my first time visiting Bogue Chitto State Park. Sleeping in the bunk bed type rooms was a new experience also. I didn't have an opportunity to explore the grounds in the surrounding area. However, the pamphlet listed several sites I would love to go back & visit. There were bikers& campers all over the park. The shower & bathroom accommodations could have been cleaner & better. The participants, decorations, food, & atmosphere in the banquet areas made up for all that. I would recommend this for a family who enjoys camping & being outdoors with family.

Beautiful place! Very big and clean. Super friendly people working here! Highly recommended! Extremely nice if you like mountain bike trail riding. Amazing bicycle track and walking trails. Best state park in Louisiana

Best park in Louisiana. The bike trails are hands down the BEST. Perfect for all ages and experience levels. The upgraded playgrounds are a plus for the young ones. The camp store has good food along with anything you maybe need. Clean and good upkeep of the place. Also, the people who work at the park are great.

Bogue Chitto State park is a great place to stay, fish, tube down the river, or bike. It does not matter if you are a beginner or an advanced rider, there are trails for everyone. The pump track is great for kids to play on. They have even built a small balance bike loop for small kids to learn and play on. Definitely a place to go check out and make a day of exploring the park.

Quite literally this park has something for everyone, hiking, biking, camping, glamping if you're into that. They have primitive camping. The hiking trails are great, plenty of them. You have access to a river that you can actually get in not just look at. Bathrooms a plenty, they literally spared no expense on this park, its well covered. $3.00 well spent. Don't know why I havent been here sooner. Plan on coming back and exploring more. The Gorge trail is absolutely beautiful, especially down in the gorge around this time of spring. Flowers, birds, and the creek running made for a excellent hike.

It was great, Gorge Trail was sweet, took a splash in the river, great time, hiked over 7 miles, not into mountain biking but they had some really cool looking courses and jumps, didn’t camp but if we did it would have been nice I bet. 5 stars easy

Awesome camping experience, with bike, hiking, and horse trails, it feels open. They feature a bike park area with multiple trails and features. There are multiple lakes and a river for kayaking with paths to small but nice beaches. There is a playground, and splash pad with camping spots all around.

Bogue Chitto state park is a pretty awesome place! Trails for days, the playground is AMAZING (also has a splash pad) & the camp store (I don’t think it’s affiliated with the actual park?) is awesome too! Has lots of things that you need if you forget anything at home. They also sell hunts brothers pizza & they have blue bell ice cream by the scoop! The lady that runs the store is absolutely amazing! You can rent golf carts & bikes! The bike park is also pretty awesome too! But don’t forget your helmets!
