Boise/Big Trinity Lake
Overview
Big Trinity Lake Campground, nestled within the Boise National Forest near Mountain Home, offers one of the highest-elevation camping experiences in Idaho. Situated at approximately 8,000 feet, this destination provides a serene escape into the sub-alpine wilderness. It is a primitive site designed for those who want to disconnect and enjoy the raw beauty of the Trinity Mountains, far away from the noise of the city.
Location & Surroundings
Reaching this destination requires navigating steep, winding forest service roads, which adds to its remote and rugged charm. The park is surrounded by towering granite peaks and crystal-clear alpine lakes that reflect the bright Idaho sky. Visitors are treated to breathtaking vistas of the Sawtooth Range in the distance and lush meadows filled with seasonal wildflowers during the short but vibrant summer season.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic forest service site, amenities are limited to the essentials to preserve the natural environment. The park provides vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water, though there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available for trailers. Each site typically includes a heavy-duty fire ring and a picnic table. Due to the narrow and unpaved access roads, this location is best suited for smaller RVs, camper vans, and truck campers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this high-country gem. Travelers can hike the challenging trail to the Trinity Mountain Lookout, the highest fire lookout in the state, offering unparalleled 360-degree views. Fishing and non-motorized boating on Big Trinity Lake are popular activities for those seeking quiet reflection, while the surrounding trail systems provide endless opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who prioritize spectacular scenery and solitude over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for travelers seeking a dry camping experience in a high-altitude setting. If you enjoy cool mountain air, rugged landscapes, and being completely off the grid, this hidden treasure in the Idaho backcountry offers a deeply rewarding travel experience.

I went on a Monday, so the place was almost totally deserted- very nice. The lake and scenery are beautiful and the fishing was good. This campground is for sleeping in tents, there really isn't any flat ground except for where it has been leveled for tents. I really didn't see anywhere you could park a trailer or larger RV. The campground was clean- lots of firewood stacked everywhere- though there wasn't anyone else in the campground- I was in on the SW end of the lake. The drive up is rough, need good clearance, though I did see a few people with horse trailers on the way- those horses had to take a beating. Also- the road from Fall Creek up is still closed, you need to go through Pine-Featherville.

It was ok not good for bumper pulls or rv's the road very narrow. The camp site are small and close together. But it was clean and quiet cuz the road was still closed. Lol

Great place for camping, fishing and hiking.

Beautiful place! The only downfall are the constant ATV's driving up from Anderson reservoir.

Went fishing today the fish were not biting but the trip and scenery were great. Trinity Lake is an alpine lake at about 8100 ft elevation. Beautiful area but many dead trees form Forrest fires a few years ago.

Nice little hike to get there but it was a fun night of fishing and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.

Beautiful campground. Very peaceful. Lucked out and saw an osprey fishing. Spot 17 is awesome. There is a little creek flowing next to it. Ice cold water. I stepped into the lake and had muck up to my knee. So much for wading. There are sections of the road with very fine and deep moon dust.

Beautiful spot, 10$ per night for camping. Fishing was poor -1 star for that. The road from Featherville is far easier than the road from Anderson Ranch (which requires 4 wheel drive and clearance).
