Bradbury Mountain

Overview

Bradbury Mountain State Park stands as one of Maine's inaugural state parks, offering a tranquil escape just a short drive north of Portland. It provides a classic Maine camping experience that prioritizes the beauty of the natural world over man-made luxuries. While the park is widely recognized for its stunning summit vistas, the campground itself provides a peaceful, shaded retreat nestled under a dense canopy of mature trees.

Location & Surroundings

Conveniently located in Pownal, the park serves as a perfect transition point between the rugged Maine coast and the rolling inland hills. It is exceptionally well-placed for travelers who want to explore Freeport or Portland without staying in a busy urban environment. The immediate surroundings are defined by lush forests and the iconic summit of Bradbury Mountain, which grants hikers panoramic views that extend to the sparkling waters of Casco Bay.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional state park where the amenities focus on supporting an authentic outdoor lifestyle. The campground features wooded sites that can accommodate smaller RVs and camper vans, though travelers should be prepared for a rustic stay as there are no utility hookups on-site. Facilities include shared drinking water stations, a family-friendly playground, and well-maintained restrooms. It is a premier choice for those seeking a natural forest setting and a break from the noise of a traditional resort.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the park serving as a major hub for mountain biking and multi-use trail running. With over 20 miles of trails, there is terrain for every skill level. In the spring, the park becomes a hotspot for the annual hawk watch, attracting birders from across the region. Beyond the park boundaries, the famous L.L.Bean flagship store in nearby Freeport and the historic Old Port district in Portland offer endless dining and shopping opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is best suited for RVers who appreciate primitive-style camping and want to be fully immersed in the Maine wilderness. It is an excellent fit for active families who enjoy hiking and mountain biking directly from their campsite. If you operate a smaller travel trailer or a conversion van and prefer the quiet rustle of leaves over the crowded atmosphere of a commercial park, this destination offers the serenity you are looking for.

Pretty place. There are several trails to reach the Summit. The shortest but a but steep trail is the SUMMIT.

Short easy hike great for beginners. An hour or less out and back. Good for kids

Nice little park with some winding trails. We ended up taking a detour on the boundry trail and hiked around an old quarry. View from the summit is good but not great. With the quarry detour we were able to hike 6.5 miles.

This is a wonderful place to go hiking. There are different trails to meet the needs of all visitors, and the view at the top is breathtaking. I highly recommend going (and bringing your pup along for the adventure!)

Bradbury mountain isn't one of the more popular hikes/summit/camping ground in this part of Maine, which makes a quiet spot to get away from the crowds and what not. The summit has different trail options, the steeper one is only .2 miles so you can get up to the views pretty quickly. Dog friendly, a mix of incline and stairs. There's also a playground and picnic area (near the parking lot, not up the mountain lol)

Bradbury Mountain State Park is a fantastic spot for a family hike! The trails are well-maintained, and the hike to the summit is short but rewarding, making it great for kids and beginner hikers. The views from the top are beautiful, especially in the fall when the foliage is vibrant. It’s the perfect place to enjoy nature without committing to a long or difficult trek. There are also picnic areas, so you can relax after your hike. Overall, it’s a great, accessible park for a quick outdoor adventure!

I came here with a friend in October 2023 for a day of hiking. It's gorgeous, and the trails are manageable even for novice hikers. There are some steeper hills, if you want them, but it's all good. Lots of people brought their kids there, too. The proximity to Portland makes for some great post-hiking entertainment options. It's been over a year since we went and I'm still thinking about it. We will come back.

There’s a trail for everyone at Bradbury. The park rangers are so friendly and helpful as well. The views at the overlooks & summit are wonderful, and there are enough trails to explore several times without ever getting bored. Heck, I’ve been going regularly for well over a decade and I’ll never get bored. Great for trail running, too!

Multiple trails, both easy and intermediate difficulty. Depending on which trail you choose, it may take 30 minutes to an hour to reach the summit and be rewarded with a spectacular view.

Sooooo….this was great! It’s busy because it’s very popular. There are several trail options. Two of them get you to the top with about a 15 minute walk. The views are lovely from the bald surface of granite. When we went in October, the leaves made the view even better. I highly recommend this. The drive to get there is lovely too.
