Brimley

Overview

Brimley State Park stands as one of the oldest and most beloved state parks in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Established in 1923, it offers a historic yet comfortable camping experience along the scenic Whitefish Bay. This park is renowned for providing a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of Lake Superior’s waves create a relaxing environment. It serves as an essential destination for travelers who appreciate well-maintained facilities while immersing themselves in the rugged beauty of the North.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located directly on the south shore of Whitefish Bay, offering expansive views of the horizon. The surrounding area is a mix of lush woodland and coastal dunes, providing a diverse ecosystem for local wildlife. One of the most captivating aspects of the location is the proximity to the shipping lanes, where visitors can watch massive Great Lakes freighters navigate the waters. The transition from the thick evergreen forests to the sandy shoreline defines the unique character of this Upper Peninsula gem.

Amenities & Park Features

Brimley State Park is well-equipped for modern RV travel, offering over 200 campsites that feature electrical service. The park is home to a beautiful sandy beach where the water is famously shallower and warmer than other parts of Lake Superior, making it perfect for wading. Key amenities include:

  • Modern restrooms with heated shower facilities
  • A large playground area for children
  • A dedicated boat launch for easy water access
  • Picnic areas with scenic lakefront views

The layout of the park ensures that even larger rigs can navigate the loops comfortably, with many sites offering enough space for slide-outs and gear.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the Eastern Upper Peninsula offers a wealth of exploration opportunities. A short drive will take you to the Point Iroquois Lighthouse, where you can climb the tower for a panoramic view of the bay. Nature enthusiasts often head into the Hiawatha National Forest for miles of hiking and biking trails. Additionally, the historic city of Sault Ste. Marie is nearby, allowing visitors to witness the engineering marvel of the Soo Locks in person.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an exceptional choice for families and maritime enthusiasts who enjoy a blend of relaxation and sightseeing. It is ideal for those who prefer a structured campground over boondocking, as the modern amenities and paved pads cater to comfortable RV living. If you are looking for a basecamp that offers both the tranquility of a Great Lake and proximity to major Upper Peninsula landmarks, this park will perfectly suit your travel style.

Brimley State Park is scheduled for an enhancement project, and will be constructing new restroom and shower facilities. The campground will tentatively close through at least June 30, 2022. A construction status update will be posted Jan. 14. All 3 shower/restroom buildings are being replaced!! A long overdue and welcome enhancement.

Stayed here for the first time in July 2021, and would definitely come back. This is a big campground with a lot of sites, but even when full on a holiday weekend seemed pretty mellow and quiet. The large line of sites along the water all have access to the sandy beach - not what I expected for Lake Superior - and some at the end of the loops, like 96 where we stayed, are be great for groups if all booked in a block together. Lastly, the store at the park entrance was really well stocked for anything you forget, from food to decent beer and wine, camp tools and supplies, etc.!

Nice campground but a little close together. Employees seem nice. Only complaint is the bathrooms. Some are newer and some are older. The newer ones are nicer and cleaner, and as you could've guessed the older ones are grosser. In the older one closest to our site the stall dividers were so short you could make eye contact with the people next to you while standing up. Decided to give the showers at it a chance after they had been cleaned at 2pm. They also state that they clean 3 times a day for an hour in the morning/afternoon with the last cleaning from 1-2pm, which isn't always the case. They will wait til 2:30 or 4 to start cleaning sometimes. The only light in the shower room was so dim it was hard to see. The drain was full of long dark hair and the walls were covered in said hair. The ceiling also had mold because there is no ventilation at all. So if you're staying here I'd recommend finding one of the newer bathrooms to use.
