Overview
Brooks Memorial State Park offers a peaceful retreat located near the foot of the Simcoe Mountains in Washington. Spanning over 700 acres, this park is known for its diverse landscapes, featuring a mix of lush forest and high-desert terrain. It serves as an excellent base for travelers exploring Klickitat County, providing a quiet atmosphere away from the high-traffic corridors of the nearby Columbia River Gorge. The park provides a rustic but well-maintained environment that highlights the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Location & Surroundings
Situated off Highway 97, the park sits at an elevation that provides a cooler escape during the warm summer months. The surroundings are dominated by towering Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, with the seasonal Little Klickitat River winding through the grounds. This specific location marks a transition zone where the arid landscapes of eastern Washington meet the timbered hills of the Cascades, offering diverse birdwatching opportunities and a unique ecological experience for visitors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Just a short drive from the park is the Goldendale Observatory State Park, one of the nation's largest public observatories, offering incredible stargazing opportunities. History and art enthusiasts should visit the Maryhill Museum of Art or the nearby Stonehenge Memorial, a full-scale replica of the original. Additionally, the park’s proximity to the Columbia River provides access to world-class fishing and windsurfing, making it easy to enjoy both the forest and the water in a single afternoon.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal fit for nature lovers and stargazers who prefer a quiet, wooded environment over a busy resort-style atmosphere. It is particularly well-suited for families looking for accessible hiking and those traveling with pets who enjoy forest walks. Because it offers full hookups in a natural setting, it attracts RVers who want the comforts of home while being fully immersed in the scenic beauty and tranquility of the Washington wilderness.

Came here in late October during the week and I was the only one tent camping (it was pretty cold so I can see why). The tent camping signage could use some work since it wasn’t very obvious where the trails leading to them were, and the trail itself was so nondescript that I wasn’t even sure if it was the right one. Beautiful park regardless, but definitely bring earplugs for the traffic noise at night.

I have hiked and ridden my horses at this place many times. I love the trails here. Some spots are more difficult and single track but most of the trails are wide enough to easily ride side by side with someone. The meadow at the top of the hill has a beautiful view of Mt. Hood and pretty flowers. They even have some picnic tables you can sit at! The rangers have been working hard this year to block off trails that are not part of the trail system and make them easier to follow. Excellent conditioning trails that have good footing and nice long hills. If your horse is really sensitive to rocks, I'd recommend protective hoof wear. Most of it is soft but there are some gravel parts that could bother a tender footed horse. -1 star because they are closed in the summer! Big bummer. I would LOVE if they would add a horse campground.

Very nice park, has disc golf and lots of hiking trails, but it’s close to the highway so lots of road noise till late in the evening, bathrooms very clean, nice picnic area.

Beautiful park! Beautiful location! Pretty drive there! I didn’t see anything wrong with the state park! Except for one thing, my wife & I used there showers happy to see that they were free! The problem with the showers is they didn’t get hot enough, they weren’t cold but they felt lukewarm to me to be honest! But that’s not a serious issue, I’m sure it’s a fixable thing. I would totally camp here again!

This is a quite and peaceful park. It also has friendly helpful staff. It also has great hiking trails. It is also close to the Goldendale observatory. We come here almost every year to watch the Perseid meteor showers.

Nice park, clean and well maintained. The noise from the power lines is the only detractor.
